Vector Prob

The document contains a series of physics problems related to vector analysis, including sketching vectors, finding components, and calculating heights and distances using trigonometry. It also covers scenarios involving a boat crossing a river and projectile motion from a cannon. Each problem requires the application of vector principles and kinematic formulas.

Physics 111 – Vector Problems

1. Sketch the following vectors on the graph below.

(a) Vector A with magnitude 4.0 cm and an angle θ = 45◦ above the −x axis.
(b) Vector B with magnitude 4.0 cm and an angle θ = 45◦ above the +x axis.
(c) Vector C with magnitude 4.0 cm and an angle θ = 45◦ below the −x axis.

2. (a) Find the components, Bx and By respectively, for the vector B with magnitude
and direction given by B = 3.5 m and θ = 66◦ , respectively.

(b) Find the magnitude D and the angle θ for the vector D with components Dx =
75.5 m and Dy = 6.20 m.
3. A girl wants to find the height of a cliff. She stands with her back to the base of the
cliff, then steps straight away from it for 1.10 × 102 m. At this point she lies on the
ground and measures the angle from the horizontal to the top of the cliff. If the angle
is 52.0◦ ,

(a) how high is the cliff?

(b) What is the straight-line distance from the girl to the top of the cliff?

(c) What angle would the girl find if she walked 1.75 × 102 m to make her measure-
ment?
4. A boat pilot wishes to head due East across a river. The river flows South at a speed
of 5 mi/h, and the boat can make a speed of 20 mi/h in still water.

(a) Sketch a vector diagram showing the velocity of the river, the boat velocity relative
to the river, the boat velocity relative to an observer on the bank.

(b) At what heading should the boat go if it is to cross the river at full speed.

5. A cannon shoots a projectile at a speed of 40 m/s at an angle of 30◦ to the horizontal.

(a) Find the horizontal and vertical components of the muzzle velocity.

(b) The shot flies through the air for four seconds before hitting before crashing into
the ground at the same height as it began. How far has it travelled horizontally
in that time? vertically?

(c) BONUS: calculate the 4 s time of flight by using kinematic formulas for vertical
motion. Why does this work?
