Question 1.4
A site measuring 10 km2 is to undergo dynamic compaction. The geology consists of saturated
loose sand 6 m deep. Given that the compactor weighs 32T, 1.5m in diameter, the height of fall
is 15m and the number of drops N is 18.
a. Determine:
i. The number of passes required
ii. The induced settlement
b. What would be the induced settlement if the soil consists of loose clay with Cu = 25kPa
Solution
a. i) Number of passes
𝐸𝑆 2 (32 × 9.81 × 15) × 32
𝑃= = = 4.9
𝑁𝑀𝐻 18 × 32 × 15
= 5 𝑝𝑎𝑠𝑠𝑒𝑠
ii) The induced settlement
𝑑𝑒𝑝𝑡ℎ 𝑜𝑓 𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑝𝑎𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛, 𝐷 = 𝑛√𝑚𝐻
= 0.5√32 × 15
= 10.95 𝑚
This depth 𝑑 (= 10.95) > 𝑠𝑜𝑖𝑙 𝑑𝑒𝑝𝑡ℎ(= 6𝑚) therefore okay
The approximate induced settlement as a percentage = 7%
The induced settlement,
7
= × 10.95
100
= 0.767 𝑚
b) Depth of compaction
𝐸𝐷 (32 × 9.81 × 15) × 1.5
𝐷 = 0.4√ =√ 𝜋
𝐴𝑐𝑢 ( 2)
4 15 × 25
= 5.058 𝑚
Since depth, 𝑑(= 5.058) < 6, 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑠𝑜𝑖𝑙 𝑑𝑒𝑝𝑡ℎ, the we increase the height of fall.
Take the height of fall as 25m
𝐸𝐷 (32 × 9.81 × 25) × 1.5
= 0.4√ =√ 𝜋
𝐴𝑐𝑢 ( 2)
4 1.5 × 25
= 6.53 𝑚
The approximate induced settlement as a percentage = 2%
The induced settlement,
2
= ×6
100
= 0.13 𝑚
