TIME

correctness.
● To learn the relation between various time units
● To read the calendar.
Reading time on a clock:
When the minute hand moves from one number to the next, it takes 5 minutes.
Half past 6 or 6:30 or 30 minutes past 6
Quarter past 6 or 6:15 or 15 minutes past 6
Quarter to 6 or 5:45 or 15 minutes to 6
1. Calculate the time taken by the minute hand to move from:
a. 1 to 4
Solution:
5 minutes + 5 minutes + 5 minutes = 15 minutes
So, the minute hand takes 15 minutes to move from 1 to 4.
b. 6 to 10
Solution:
5 minutes+ 5 minutes + 5 minutes+ 5 minutes = 20 minutes
So, the minute hand takes 20 minutes to move from 6 to 10.
c. 4 to 11
Solution:
5 minutes + 5 minutes + 5 minutes + 5 minutes + 5 minutes +
5minutes+ 5minutes= 35 minutes
So, the minute hand takes 35 minutes to move from 4 to 11.

Telling the time before and after:
1. Reetu’s dance class starts at 3:15 p.m. and her dance class is for 1 hour. What time Reetu
finishes her dance class?
Solution:
Time at which dance class starts = 3:15 p.m.
Duration of her dance class = 1 hour
Time at which her dance class finishes = 3:15 + 1 hour= 4:15 p.m.
2. Tim was playing in the park for 2 hours. He went to the park at 3 o’clock in the evening.
What time did Tim leave the park?
Solution:
Time at which Tim went to park = 3:00
Duration of time he played in the park = 2 hours
Time at which Tim left the park = 3:00 + 2 hours = 5:00 p.m.
3. The concert began at 8: 30 and was 3 hours long. At what time did the concert get over?
Solution:
Time at which concert began = 8:30
Duration of the concert = 3 hours
Time at which the concert get over= 8:30 + 3 hours = 11:30

1 day = 24 hours
1 hour = 60 minutes
1 minute = 60 seconds
Calendar:
1 year = 12 months
1 year = 52 weeks and one day
1 year = 365 days
1 leap year = 366 days
1 month = 4 weeks + a few days
1 month = 31/30 / 28 /29 days
1 week = 7 days
1fortnight = 14 days
1 day = 24 hours
1 hour= 60 minutes

1. Given below is the calendar of December 2023. Look at it and answer the following
questions:
a) How many Saturdays were in December 2023? 5
b) Which day was 20th December? Wednesday
c) Which day was the first day of December 2023? Friday
d) How many full weeks were in December 2023? 4
e) Which day was 1st January, 2024? Monday

Ms. Sharma is a school teacher. On every working day, she reaches the school at
8:30 in the morning. The school gets over at 2 o’ clock in the afternoon. In the evening,
she teaches children of poor families in her neighborhood for 2 hours. She starts
teaching them at 4:30 in the evening. Write all the times given in the story using a.m.
or p.m.
Solution:
She reaches school at 8:30 a.m.
School gets over at 2:00 p.m.
She starts teaching the children in her neighborhood at 4:30 p.m.
She finishes her teaching at 6:30 p.m.
MIP:
Find the time difference between India and UAE. Imagine that you are having your
brunch at 11 o’clock in UAE. What will be the corresponding time in India?
Solution:
The time difference between India and UAE is 1 hour 30 minutes.
Time at which I have brunch in UAE = 11:00 a.m.
The corresponding time in India = 11:00 + 1:30 = 12:30 p.m.

Solution:
Time Taken: 8 minutes and 20 seconds
Critical thinking:
The school starts at 8 o’clock in the morning every day. Jessy reaches the school 5
minutes before 8:00 and Roshan reaches the school at 8:15 every day. Who reaches the
school at a better time?
Solution:
Time at which school starts = 8:00 a.m.
Time at which Jessy reaches school= 8:00 – 5 minutes=7:55 a.m.
Time at which Roshan reaches school = 8:15 a.m.
So, Jessy reaches school at a better time.
