45. A stone of mass 0.25kg tied to the end of a string is whirled round in a circle of
radius 1.5m with a speed of 40revolutions/min in a horizontal plane. What is the
tension in the string? What is the maximum speed with which the stone can be
whirled around if the string can with stand a maximum tension of 200N?
46. A rocket is fired from the earth towards the sun. At what distance from the earth’s
centre is the gravitational force on the rocket zero? Mass of sun = 2x1030 kg, mass of
the earth = 6x1024 kg. Neglect the effect of other planets. (Orbital radius = 1.5x1011
m).
47. In a test experiment on a model aeroplane in a wind tunnel, the flow speeds on the
upper and lower surfaces of the wing are 70ms-1 and 63ms-1 respectively. What is the
lift on the wing if its area is 2.5m2? Take the density of air to be 1.3kgm-3.
48. The acceleration due to gravity on the surface of moon is 1.7ms-2, what is the time
period of a simple pendulum on the surface of the moon if its time period on the
surface of earth is 3.5s? Given: g=9.8ms-2.
