LESSON PROPER

I. HOW THE INTERNET WORKS

 The internet is a global network of interconnected computers and devices that communicate
with one another to share information.

 Instead of being a single system, the internet is made up of millions of smaller networks
connected worldwide. These networks are owned and managed by governments, companies,
schools, and individuals.

 Basic process of how the internet works:

o A user sends a request (for example, opening a website or sending a message).

o The request is broken into small pieces of data called packets.

o These packets travel through different networks and routes using routers and servers.

o The packets reach the destination computer or server.

o The destination sends back the requested information, which is reassembled and
displayed to the user.
 Internet Service Providers (ISPs)

o ISPs are companies that provide users with access to the internet.

o Examples include broadband, fiber, and mobile data providers.

 Servers and Clients

o A client is a device used by a person to access the internet, such as a computer or

smartphone.

o A server is a powerful computer that stores websites, files, emails, and online services
and responds to client requests.

 Importance of the Internet

o Enables fast communication and information sharing.

o Supports education, business, healthcare, and government services.

o Connects people globally regardless of location.

II. TYPES OF NETWORKS

 A network is a group of interconnected devices that can share data, resources, and information.

 Personal Area Network (PAN)

o Covers a very small area, usually around a single person.

o Examples include Bluetooth connections between smartphones, earphones, and

smartwatches.

 Local Area Network (LAN)

o Connects devices within a limited area such as a home, school, office, or computer
laboratory.

o Allows users to share files, printers, and internet connections.

 Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)

o Covers a larger area such as a city or campus.

o Often used by institutions or local governments to connect multiple LANs.

 Wide Area Network (WAN)

o Covers a very large geographic area, often across cities, countries, or continents.

o The internet itself is the largest example of a WAN.

 Wireless Networks

o Use wireless signals such as Wi-Fi or mobile data instead of cables.

o Commonly used in homes, schools, cafes, and public spaces.

III. INTERNET SERVICES AND PROTOCOLS

 Internet services are applications and functions made possible through the internet.

 Common Internet Services

o World Wide Web (WWW) – Allows users to access websites and online content.

o Email – Enables sending and receiving electronic messages.

o Social Media – Platforms for communication, sharing, and networking.

o Video Conferencing – Supports online meetings and virtual classes.

o File Transfer and Sharing – Allows users to upload, download, and share files.

 Internet Protocols

o Protocols are rules that govern how data is transmitted over the internet.

 Common Internet Protocols

o TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) – The basic protocol that

enables communication between devices on the internet.

o HTTP/HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) – Used to access websites; HTTPS provides

secure communication.

o FTP (File Transfer Protocol) – Used to transfer files between computers.

o SMTP, POP3, IMAP – Protocols used for sending and receiving email.

 Understanding internet services and protocols helps students use online tools safely and
efficiently.

IV. CLOUD COMPUTING

 Cloud computing refers to the delivery of computing services such as storage, applications, and
processing power over the internet instead of using local devices.

 Instead of saving files only on a computer, cloud computing allows users to store and access data
online from anywhere with an internet connection.

 Examples of Cloud Services

o Online storage platforms for documents, photos, and videos.

o Cloud-based email and productivity tools.

o Online learning management systems and virtual classrooms.

o Automatic updates and backups.

 Challenges of Cloud Computing

o Dependence on internet connectivity.

o Privacy and security concerns.

o Data ownership and control issues.

 Cloud computing plays a major role in modern education, business, and daily digital activities.

LEARNING ACTIVITY

 Activity: My Internet Use

o List at least five internet services you use regularly.

o Identify the type of network you usually connect to.

o Explain how cloud computing helps you as a student.

ASSESSMENT

 A. Identification

o The global network of interconnected computers.

o A network that covers a small area such as a home or school.

o Technology that allows online storage and services.

 B. Essay

o Explain how the internet and cloud computing have changed the way students learn.

SUMMARY

 The internet is a global system of interconnected networks that enables communication and

LANs connect devices within a limited area, like homes or offices, allowing resource sharing such as files and printers locally . They are cost-effective for small-scale environments and are typically faster due to limited range . WANs, on the other hand, connect larger geographic areas such as cities and countries; the internet is the largest example of a WAN . WANs support broader communication and connectivity, but often entail higher setup and maintenance costs .

Different network types serve varying scopes and requirements: PANs facilitate personal device connectivity in immediate vicinities through Bluetooth for gadgets like smartphones and smartwatches . LANs serve institutional environments, supporting resource sharing and internet access within limited areas . MANs extend coverage to city-wide or campus settings, enabling broad connectivity across clustered LANs, often for municipal or organizational operations . WANs support global interconnectivity, necessitating robust infrastructure for cross-geographic communication, exemplified by the worldwide internet itself . These variations allow tailored applications, from personal device syncing to global data collaborations.

Cloud computing introduces security concerns like unauthorized data access and breaches as data is stored offsite, often managed by third-party providers . Privacy issues involve data ownership and control because users may have limited influence over access policies once data is mobile within the cloud environment . Although service providers implement stringent security measures like encryption and access controls, vulnerabilities remain concerning their policies and potential data exposure due to misconfigurations or insider threats . These risks necessitate careful evaluation of providers, robust access management, and ongoing security assessments.

Wireless networks provide easy and flexible internet access in public spaces like schools and cafes without needing physical cables, which enhances user mobility and convenience . However, they face challenges such as security risks due to open access, potential congestion leading to slower speeds when many users are connected, and infrastructure costs associated with maintaining signal quality and coverage .
