Genetic Variation: Mechanisms of Evolution
Learning Objectives
1. Describe the examples of genetic variation observed in a population.
2. Discuss the genetic mechanisms that cause change in populations of some
organisms.
3. Explain how each genetic mechanism causes change in populations.

Most Essential Learning Competency

Explain the mechanisms that produce a change in populations from
generation to generation (e.g., artificial selection, natural selection, genetic
drift, mutation, recombination) (STEM_BIO11/12-IIIc-g-9)
POEM ANALYSIS:
The differences between the genes of each
individual and the differences between genes of
the different populations.

GENE FREQUENCY
Gene frequency refers
to determine how common a
specific gene is in a group of species
within a specific area.
EVOLUTION
The change in the genetic materials of organisms,
it is a change manifested in their traits. It is also a
change that started deep within the cells of
individuals, in their genes, in their DNA, and their
chromosomes.

OF
EVOLUTION
Artificial Selection
This is also termed selective
breeding. It is when humans
selectively choose to breed
animals and plants with
specific traits that they deem
beneficial for different
purposes.

NATURAL Selection
Nature or the environment
dictates which among the
organisms will survive, this
organism has a certain variety
of traits or characteristics that
will be passed on to the next
generation.

Activity: Beyond Walls
Direction: Read the excerpt of RA 9147 also known as the
Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act.

Essential Question:
The Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act is
only one among the many efforts of our government to protect
many organisms in our country. You have learned that only those
who are fit to survive in the environment are the ones that will
propagate. Knowing this, do you think that protecting endangered
species is upsetting the process of natural selection?
Gene Flow or migration
This occurs when a group or individual species migrates
from one place to another affecting the gene pool of the
place that they left and the place where they arrived.

GENETIC DRIFT
Genetic drift is a mechanism that may bring change to the
gene frequency in a population because of “chance” events.

Recombination

Recombination or gene
shuffling is life’s way of
bringing variety in
similarity.

MUTATION
Changes in the DNA codes
may result from internal or
external factors. Internal
factors happen when the DNA
fails to copy or duplicate the
DNA correctly. External
factors are usually caused by
radiation. [Link]
SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION

observe the assigned illustration. Identify and explain the
mechanisms of evolution that apply to the given illustration.

EVOLUTION!
A – Artificial Selection B – Natural Selection C – Genetic Drift
D – Mutation E – Recombination F – Gene Flow

1. Survival of the fittest.

2. Also known as gene migration.
3. Choosing desirable traits to pass on to the offspring.
4. Happens during a crossing-over stage in meiosis.
5. Reassortment of genes through new chromosome combinations.
6. Caused by the emigration or immigration of a population.
7. Related to the bottleneck and founder effect.
8. Change at the DNA level that may affect the chromosomes and
eventually the organism’s chances of survival and reproduction.
9. The environment dictates which among the organisms will survive.

Assignment
BE A VOICE!
Organizations that aim to protect the rights of animals have been battling leisure breeders
to stop selective breeding because they view it as a form of abuse or cruelty to animals.
Selective breeding or artificial selection is a mechanism that has brought a huge impact on the
gene frequency of animals especially domesticated ones like dogs and cats.
There are cases when breeding animals such as dogs resulted in diseases and
malformation or abnormalities in the resulting offspring.
In your point of view as a senior high school STEM student, is it proper to continue
selective breeding/artificial selection? Support your claim and your answer in a bulleted
format.
