Design and Detailing of a Multi-Storey Reinforced Concrete Commercial
Building
Problem Statement: (Each group has a choice to choose structural type)
Design a G+5 reinforced concrete (RC) commercial building located in seismic
zone V as per IS 1893 (Part 1): 2016 and designed for ductile detailing as per IS
13920:2016. The building consists of office spaces, open-plan halls, a service
core, and parking on the ground floor. The design must address both gravity and
lateral load resistance systems and cover all relevant aspects of structural
behavior, serviceability, and detailing.
Scope of Work:
1. Modeling & Analysis
o Develop 3D models of the building in ETABS or [Link]
o Perform linear static and nonlinear pushover analysis
o Study moment-rotation behavior and capacity hierarchy
2. Design Requirements
o Beams & Columns (including long and short columns)
o Shear Walls (RC squat walls)
o RC Joints (Beam-column joint detailing)
o Flat Slab or Grid Slab system for one typical floor
o Deep Beams and Corbels (supporting staircase or transfer
girders)
o Staircase or Cantilever balcony with strut-and-tie modeling
3. Inelastic Behavior & Detailing
o Moment-curvature and rotation analysis of beams
o Detailing for bar curtailment, anchorage, and ductility
o Application of strength hierarchy and capacity design principles
4. Serviceability
o Crack width control as per IS 456 and deflection checks (short &
long-term)
o Fire resistance rating and structural response under elevated
temperature
5. Material Properties
o Use stress-strain curves for confined and unconfined concrete
o Consider cyclic loading and creep/shrinkage in key elements
Deliverables:
Full structural design report including:
o Assumptions, loads, and modeling approach
o Design calculations (hand and software-based)
o Structural drawings with detailing (AutoCAD or equivalent)
o ETABS or STAAD model files
o Discussion on serviceability and fire resistance
