What is RPL?
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is the process that acknowledges the skills and abilities that you have built up via prior study, which includes both formal and non-formal
learning, along with work experience and volunteering. Through RPL on specific units, you can receive your qualification without having to repeat the same learnings that you’ve
already experienced.
Under the Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) which regulates education in Australia, all students are entitled to have their previous skills, experience and training
recognised to enhance their progression into and between qualifications.
Every Registered Training Organisation (RTO) has different policies and procedures for assessing your eligibility for RPL, but the basis of the procedure stays the same. The
experience and skills that you’ve gained throughout your work or school life can fast track you towards completing a qualification earlier, and lessen the time burden of having to
undergo a course to get you closer to your dream career.
“Recognition of prior learning is an assessment process that involves assessment of an individual’s relevant prior learning (including formal, informal and non-
formal learning) to determine the credit outcomes of an individual application for credit.”
–RPL Meaning as defined by the AQF
Who’s Eligible for RPL in Australia?
If you’ve undergone a qualification in a particular area, worked in a position that’s enabled you to undergo industry- relevant tasks, or simply been trained in-house through a
company you’ve previously worked for; you may be eligible to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning through a course you’re interested in taking part in.
If the evidence is relevant to the course you’re interested in, this information will be assessed by the education provider running the course and they will determine whether you’re
a suitable applicant. If they find your experience to , you can gain credits towards your chosen course, and essentially, complete it in next to no time.

The Benefits of RPL
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) in Australia allows individuals to gain formal qualifications by recognizing skills and experience acquired through work, training, or life. This
process can reduce study time and costs by awarding credit for what you already know. RPL also enhances access to education by providing eligibility for courses without formal
prerequisites, supporting career advancement.
Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) assess RPL based on Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) guidelines, ensuring fair and standardized recognition. RPL helps
Australians upskill, gain certifications faster, and improve job opportunities while contributing to a more qualified workforce.
Key Benefits of RPL
Time Efficiency: RPL can significantly reduce the time required to complete qualifications. Many adult learners have extensive experience that may equate to
credits, allowing them to skip unnecessary coursework
Cost Savings: By minimising the time spent on studies, RPL can lead to significant savings in tuition and associated educational costs. As a learner, you’re
investing in your future without incurring additional financial burdens.
Increased Employability: With RPL, individuals can demonstrate their competencies to potential employers more effectively. According to a recent survey,
74% of employers view RPL qualifications favourably, recognising them as indicators of expertise
Anecdote
Consider Jane who spent over a decade in project management. After applying for RPL, she received
credits equivalent to an entire semester of her Master’s degree.
Jane remarked, “RPL gave me the confidence to continue my studies without feeling I was starting from
scratch. It validated my experience and allowed me to focus on the areas I needed to improve.”
Eligibility & Process
There are up to seven steps in the RPL process—depending on your specific circumstances—and your assessor will guide you through them. If at any point you are not sure about
the process, we are here to help, so please reach out to your Officer responsible for L&D.
All workbooks attached to RFS courses have a section outlining that RPL is available to all members. Trainers and assessors should discuss this workbook section and answer
any questions you may have.

required performance criteria and making a decision as to whether the necessary
competence has been demonstrated ”
