Lesson two: Prepositions (on / in / at)
•Preposition: is an essential part in the English language, there are different kinds of
preposition. Without preposition we can not finish a good piece of writing or make a
comprehensive and beautiful speech.
What is a preposition?
•Definition: Prepositions are those words which are used to connect nouns, pronouns, and
phrases in any sentence.
Example: I’m setting on a chair.
⇨ It indicates the relationship between nouns, that how they are connected to each other.
⇨ It shows whether words are connected through time and place.
Example:
_ I’m watching a football match in the bedroom.
_ The prom will begin at 7 O’clock.
_ I found my bag on the table.
• Types of preposition:
1- Preposition for time: in / on / at are used for time of different nature.
In: a- Month or year:
Example: in January / in 1985.
b- Particular time of day, month or year:
Example: in morning / in evening / in first week of January / in Summer / in
Winter …
c- Century, decades or specific time in ( past, present or future):
Example: in 21st century / in stone age / in past / in present…
On: a- Day or date:
Example: on Monday / on 5th of March / March 5…
b- Particular day:
Example: on Independence day / on my birthday …
At: a- Time of clock:
Example: at 6 O’clock / at 7:30 p. M
b- Short and precise time:
Example: at noon / at sunset / at lunch time / at the moment …
Examples:
_ He was born in 1945.
_ She will go to New York on 25th of November.
_ He gets up early in the morning.
_ The concert will begin at 9 O’clock.
2- Preposition for place: in / on / at are usually used for different places.
In is usually used for places which have some boundaries ( physical or virtual).
Example: in hall / in school / in garden / in Russia…
On is used for surface of something.
Example: on blackboard / on a page / on a map / on the wall…
At is used for specific places.
Example: at the entrance / at the bus station / at the bottom of glass…
Examples:
_ She lives in Italy.
_ The wedding ceremony will be held in the hall.
_ The teacher wrote a sentence on board.
_ His house at the end of street.
Exception: in the morning / in the afternoon / at night.
