EUTECTIC SYSTEM – DETAILED NOTES
Definition:
A eutectic system is a binary system of two solid components that are completely miscible in the
liquid state but immiscible in the solid state. The mixture melts at a temperature lower than either
component at a specific composition known as eutectic composition.
Origin:
The term eutectic is derived from the Greek word “eutektos” meaning easily melted.
Phase Diagram Axes:
Y-axis: Temperature
X-axis: Composition (100% A to 100% B)
Eutectic Point:
The eutectic point represents the lowest melting temperature where liquid transforms
simultaneously into solid A and solid B.
Regions of the Diagram:
• Liquid region – only liquid exists
• Solid A + Liquid region – solid A crystallizes first
• Solid B + Liquid region – solid B crystallizes first
• Solid A + Solid B region – complete solidification
Pharmaceutical Importance:
• Causes liquefaction of powders
• Improves drug dissolution
• Used in topical formulations
Examples:
Camphor + Menthol
Camphor + Thymol
Menthol + Thymol
