Introduction To Mobile & Wireless Network
Introduction To Mobile & Wireless Network

Learning Objectives
1. Define Mobile wireless Network.
2. Understand the Mobile cellular network technologies
3. Understand the IEEE Wireless network technologies
4. Describe the differences between Wireless and Mobile network
technologies.

2
Introduction To Mobile & Wireless Network
Introduction:
 A mobile network (also wireless network) route's
communications in the form of radio waves to and from users.

 It is composed of base stations that each cover a delimited

area or "cell." When joined together these cells provide radio
coverage over a wide geographic area.
 This enables a large number of portable transceivers (e.g.,
mobile phones, laptop and modems etc.) to communicate with
each anywhere in the network by providing mobility during
transmission.

Introduction To Mobile & Wireless Network
1.1 Introduction:
 Wireless networks in small or large coverage are increasingly
popular as they promise the expected convergence of voice and
data services while providing mobility to users.
 The first major success of wireless networks is rendered to Wi-Fi
(IEEE 802.11), which opened a channel of fast and easy
deployment of a local network.
 Other wireless technologies such as Bluetooth, WiMAX and
WiMobile also show a very promising future given the high demand
of users in terms of mobility and flexibility to access all their
services from anywhere.
This chapter covers different wireless as well as mobile technologies

Introduction To Mobile & Wireless Network

1.2.1 Mobile Cellular Networks 1G:

 The first generation (1G Network) mobile network developed in
the USA was the AMPS network (Advanced Mobile Phone
System).
 It was based on FDM (Frequency Division Multiplexing).
 A data service was then added on the telephone network,
which is the CDPD (Cellular Digital Packet Data) network. It
uses TDM (Time Division Multiplexing).
 The network could offer a rate of 19.2 kbps and exploit periods
of inactivity of traditional voice channels to carry data.

1.2.2 Mobile Cellular Networks 2G:
 The second generation (2G Network) mobile network is mainly
GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications). It was first
introduced in Europe and then in the rest of the world.
 Another second-generation network is the PCS (Personal
Communications Service) network or IS-136 and IS-95; PCS was
developed in the USA.
 The IS-136 standard uses TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access)
while the IS-95 standard uses CDMA (Code Division Multiple
Access) in order to share the radio resource.
 The GSM and PCS IS-136 employ dedicated channels for data
transmission.

Introduction To Mobile & Wireless Network
1.2.3 Mobile Cellular Networks 3G:
 The ITU (International Telecommunication Union) has developed a
set of standards for a third generation (3G Network) mobile
telecommunications system under the IMT-2000 (International
Mobile Telecommunication-2000) in order to create a global
network.
 They are scheduled to operate in the frequency band around 2GHz
and offer data transmission rates up to 2 Mbps.
 In Europe, the ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards
Institute) has standardized UMTS (Universal Mobile
Telecommunications Systems) as the 3G network.

1.2.4 Mobile Cellular Networks 4G:
 The ITU (International Telecommunication Union) further
introduced standard for the fourth generation (4G) mobile
telecommunications system under the IMT- Advanced
(International Mobile Telecommunication-Advanced) to succeed
the 3G network and preceed 5G network.
 4G Network was to offer mobile service users with bandwidth
higher than 100 Mbps, to support high quality streaming
multimedia content.
 ITU expanded its definition of 4G Network to include Long Term
Evolution (LTE), Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access
(WiMAX), and Evolved High Speed Packet Access (HSPA+).

Introduction To Mobile & Wireless Network
1.2.5 Mobile Cellular Networks Evolution:
Despite the diversity, the goals has always been the same;
 To build a network capable of carrying both voice and data
 respecting the QoS (quality of service),
 Provide security
 and above all reducing the cost for the user as well as for the
operator.

1.3 IEEE wireless networks
 Many standards for wireless communication are being developed
day after day and the price of their equipment becomes
increasingly attractive, contributing to the success of these
technologies.
 In this section, we introduce the standards that are the basis of
many wireless networks.

11
Introduction To Mobile & Wireless Network
1.3.1 WLAN: IEEE 802.11
 The IEEE 802.11 standard describes the wireless area network
characteristics which is also regarded as the standard for Wi-Fi
(Wireless Fidelity)
 IEEE 802.11 can operate in two modes: infrastructure and ad-hoc.

 In the ad-hoc, Two WLAN stations can communicate directly with

each other whenever they are in the same range spectrum without
access point in the Ad-hoc mode.
 While, in the infrastructure mode, and access point is required to
control the wireless network.

13
Introduction To Mobile & Wireless Network
1.3.2 WPAN: IEEE 802.15
 The 802.15 WPAN efforts focus on the development of consensus
standards for Personal Area Networks or short distance wireless
networks.
 These WPANs address wireless networking of portable and mobile
computing devices such as PCs, Personal Digital Assistants
(PDAs), peripherals and cell phones allowing these devices to
communicate and interoperate in a small range.
 IEEE 802.15.1, is the most well known standard which is the basis
of Bluetooth technology.
 Other versions are standardized for other technologies.

14
Introduction To Mobile & Wireless Network
1.3.3 WMAN: IEEE 802.16
 The WMAN IEEE 802.16 standard was developed to support
broadband for wireless Metropolitan area network (WMAN).
 Emerging technologies such as WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability
for Microwave Access) are technologies which is based on IEEE
802.16 are profoundly changing the landscape of wireless
broadband.
 This is because providing last mile connectivity to a backbone
network (such as the Internet) continues to be a challenge of
fundamental importance for the evolution of next generation
wireless networks.

15
Introduction To Mobile & Wireless Network
1.3.4 WMAN mobile: IEEE 802.20
 IEEE 802.20 was initiated to enable worldwide deployment of;
 Affordable
 ubiquitous,
 always-on
 interoperable
And multi-vendor MBWA networks that meet the needs of
business and residential end-user markets.
 MBWA (Mobile broadband wireless access) was the primary
technology based on the IEE 802.20 standard.
 It specifies physical and MAC layers of an air interface for
interoperable MBWA systems.

Introduction To Mobile & Wireless Network
1.4 Conclussion
 Different technologies have been developed by different
organizations that come together in two main families:
1. IEEE wireless networks (Wi-Fi,WiMAX, etc.)
2. Cellular mobile networks (1G, 2G, 3G, etc.).

 Wireless network evolves to provide more bandwidth; this is with

the evolution of 4G network, and probably even better with 5G
networks.

18
Introduction To Mobile & Wireless Network
1.4 Conclusion
 The goal remains to maximize the;

 Radio resource
 Support mobility
 Providing multimedia services (voice, data, image),
 Transparency to the user
 And above all; ensuring the security of communications.
