COUC 515

BUILDING A RESEARCH DESIGN TEMPLATE

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the connection between childhood trauma, specifically
sexual abuse, and adult mental health concerns. A phenomenological method will be used to
examine participants' lived experiences and long-term psychological impact. Data collection will
include qualitative interviews, with thematic analysis guiding data interpretation. This study aims
to add to the existing literature by gathering personal accounts and addressing potential under-
reporting in sexual assault instances.

COUC 515

Does childhood trauma caused by sexual abuse increase the chances of adult mental health
disorders?
Descriptive Design (Phenomenological or Grounded)
Phenomenological Approach.
Participants
Participants will be adults between the ages of 25 and 45 who have been diagnosed with a mental
health condition and have personally suffered childhood sexual assault. To account for different
experiences and reporting patterns, the sample will seek variation in gender, socioeconomic
level, and cultural background.
Methodology
The study will use a phenomenological method to understand participants' own experiences.
People that satisfy the inclusion criteria will be sought using a purposive sampling method. To
compile in-depth qualitative data, participants will be semi-structuredly interviewed.
Research Questions
1. How do those who suffered childhood sexual abuse define the challenges they face with
their mental health in adulthood?
2. What coping mechanisms have participants developed to manage mental health struggles?
3. How does cultural stigma influence the willingness to seek professional help?
4. What recurring trends show in the accounts of survivors about their paths of mental healing?
5. In what way do the individuals view therapy's part in their healing process?
Data Collection
In-depth, semi-structured interviews either remotely or in person will be used to gather data,
therefore guaranteeing participant comfort and anonymity. With permission, each interview will
be audio recorded and transcribed for study.
Data Analysis
Transcribed interviews will be thematically analysed to detect reoccurring themes and patterns.
A qualitative coding approach will be used to code data, therefore enabling a methodical analysis
of participants' actual experiences. Methodical coding and theme development can be helped by
NVivo software. Member-checking, which will help to increase credibility, will let individuals
review and confirm results.
