Solar Insolation Lab Data & Math Key

The document provides data for an Insolation lab, including angles of incidence, mass, area, and instructions for calculating insolation. It outlines how to graph the relationship between angle of incidence and insolation, and includes evaluation questions regarding mass, area conversions, and energy calculations. Students are instructed to complete calculations and analysis based on the provided data.

Class data for Insolation lab- if you missed class that day, write this data into your

document,
complete the calculations, and graph. Then complete the analysis questions on the last page.

Angle of Incidence Mass (g) Area (m2) Insolation (watts/m2)

90 0.07 0.0004375 Divide 100 watts by

area for these numbers
Eg 100/0.0004375

80 0.08 0.0005

70 0.080 0.0005

60 0.09 0.0005625

50 0.1 0.000625

40 0.12 0.00075

30 0.14 0.000875

20 0.2 0.00125

10 0.38 0.00237

Graph area of incidence on the x-axis (independent variable) and Insolation on the y-axis
(dependent). Your question is: As area of incidence changes, how does insolation change?

Evaluation
1. Mass of the 10cm × 10cm piece of paper = ___responses will vary_ g (if measured)
2. The 10cm × 10cm paper is equal to how many m2 of paper?
_____1.0x10-2_______ m2
Show your work in the space below: Note: 1 m2 = (100 cm)2 = 10,000 cm2

(1m^2/10000cm^2) x (100cm^2/1) = 0.01m^2

3. Determine the mass per m2 for the paper = ___responses will vary_____ g / m2 (Show
your work in the space below):
4. Find the Area of each ellipse by dividing its mass by the answer in #3 above (or by counting
grid squares if using the graph paper method). Show your conversions in the space below,
making sure to show UNITS, to verify that your set-up will result in an answer that is in
m2. Place your answers in Column B of Table 1.
5. Assume that the light emitted from the flashlight has a power of 100-Watts at the surface of
the paper (which represents Earth’s surface). Find the Energy per Area by dividing this
energy (100 Watts) by the area of each ellipse. Enter your answers in Table 1, column C
(HINT: this number should decrease as you go down the column).
