Synopsis of A Midsummer Night Dream
A Midsummer Night Dream opens the play with a chorus of fairies they explain that they are under and serve to
Titania who is the fairy queen. The fairies also explain that they are present everywhere throughout the play.
Theseus and Hippolyta are discussing their wedding as they are due to get married in four days time. Theseus is
also the Duke of Athens. As Thesus and Hippolyta are discussing, Egeus enters who is complaining about Hermia
who is his daughter. Hermia is in love with Lysander but Eqeus would like Hermia to marry Demetrius. Hermia will
face death or a lifetime of being single if she doesn't listen and obey to her father.
Lysander and Hermia meet in the woods as they make their ways to Lysnaders Aunt’s house. Lysander aunts is
far enough away from Athens that none of the Athen laws apply there. The more Helen shows her love towards
Demetrius the more Demetrius pulls away from her. Helena gets told by Lysander and Hermia of their plan to run
away and get married. Demetrius used to like Helena before Hermia had come along. Helena is planning to tell
Demetrius about Hermia's flight. Helena hopes that as she's told Demetrius, Lysander will return his affections
towards her and thank her later.
As all of this is going on a group of Athens all meet up to plan a play. The performance of the play hopes to
happen before Theseus and Hippolyta’s wedding night. In the woods they meet Puck, also known as Robin
Goodfellow. Puck works for a mischievous fairy king who is known as Oberon. Throughout the play you learn that
Oberon is angry at Titania for not giving him a child that Oberon would like. Whilst Oberon and Titania argue, the
chorus carry on the story by letting us know that their fighting has had an impact on the weather. Whilst Titania is
asleep Oberon plans to squeeze a flower that will make her fall in love with the first thing she sees when she
wakes up.
Demetrius is angry at Helena as she had told him that Lysander and Hermia had made their way into the wood but
as this occurs they can not be found or are anywhere to be seen. Oberon had watched everything that had
happened and plans to help Helena. In his way to help Helena he tells Puck to go and find Demetrius and when he
does squeeze some of this magical juice into his eyes when he is asleep so that when he wakes up he falls in love
with the first person he sees.
As planned Oberon squeezed the juice into Titania's eyes whilst she sleeps. Lysander and Hermia decided to try
and get some sleep as they are tired from wandering through the woods. Puck runs into Lysander and Hermia but
accidentally mistakes Lysander for Demetrius and squeezes the juice into his eyes. Demetrius keeps rushing
ahead to get away from Helena. Helena sees Lysander asleep and goes over to him. Lysander wakes up and due
to having the juice squeezed into his eyes he immediately falls in love with her. Hermia thinks this is a trick and
that she is a cruel victim in all this. As Helena leaves she scorns Lysander, but Lysander due to being in love
follows Helena and leaves Hermia in the woods on her own.
Puck is watching Athens prepare for the upcoming wedding night. Bottom has a feeling that everyone is playing
tricks on him. This is because Puck gives him the head of an ass. Titania wakes up and due to having the magic
potion squeezed into her eyes she immediately falls in love with Bottom. As Titania is in love with Bottom, Titania
intrusts her fairies to tend to any need that Bottom needs.
Oberon is told that Pucks plan has worked. Later on Oberon realizes that Puck squeezed the magic juice into the
man's eyes as Demetruis and Hermia appear. Puck has to go and find Helens so everything that has gone wrong
can be put right. Lysander is still following Helena through the woods, still pretty sure that he loves her. Helena
becomes even more upset due to Demetrius waking up and falls in love with her. Helena is convinced that
Demetrius and Lysander are both playing a trick on her due to them both being in love with Helena. They both start
to argue over Helena and who gets to be with her.
