Section 2: Thinking
11. Given find the value of K if [2]

12. Write the equation of the function, if y= √ x vertically stretched by a factor of 2, horizontally
stretched by a factor of 2 and translated 8 units to the right. [2]

18. The graph f (x)=x2 is transformed to the graph g(x ) by a reflection and translation as
illustrated. Find the formula of g(x ) in the form of g ( x )=a x 2+ bx+ c . [3]

19. Find the number of solutions of the equation x 2−|x|−12=0. [3]

Section D: Application
20. A certain tax policy states that the first $50000 of income is taxed at 5% and any income above
$50000 is taxed at 12%.
a) Calculate the tax on $125000. [2]
b) Write a function that models the tax policy. [2]
21. An engineer is monitoring an electrical signal whose strength S(t) over time t (in milliseconds) is
modeled by the function:

The engineer needs to verify that the signal behaves predictably and does not suddenly jump or
break at the time when the absolute value expression changes behavior (at t = 4 ms). A "jump"
would indicate a loss of signal integrity, meaning the function is not continuous. The Question:

a) Rewrite the function S(t) as a piecewise function for the intervals t < 4 and t ≥4. [3]

b) Determine if the function S(t) is continuous at the point t = 4. [2]

c) If the engineer were to adjust the constant term (the +5 in the original equation) to a different
value, say +C, could they ever make the signal discontinuous at t=4? Explain your reasoning. [2]

22. An object dropped from a state of rest at time t = 0 travels a distance s(t) = 4.9t2 meters in t
seconds.
A. How far does the object travel during the time interval [2.5, 3]? [1 mark]

B. Find the average velocity of the object over [2.5, 3]. [2 mark]

C. Estimate the object's instantaneous velocity at t = 2.5 seconds. [2 marks]
