INTRODUCTION

This report talks about the Social Sciences, Applied Social Sciences, and
Counseling. These topics help us understand people, society, and how we can support
others in solving problems and improving their lives. Social Sciences focus on studying
human behavior and relationships, while Applied Social Sciences use that knowledge to
help people in real-life situations. Counseling is one of the most important applied fields
because it helps people deal with personal, emotional, and social challenges.

understand how people, businesses and governments decide what to do with their
money, time and effort. At its core, economics is the study of scarcity and how we use
our resources to improve lives both individually and as a society.

COUNSELING

Counselling is a talking therapy that encourages people to address the issue they
are facing with an eventual goal to overcome the problem.

Many professionals use counseling in their jobs, such as:

• Psychologists

• Teachers

• Nurses and health workers

• Social workers

• Therapists

• Religious leaders

• Youth and welfare workers

GOALS OF COUNSELING

Counseling has many goals depending on the needs of the person. These
include:

a. Changing behavior – helping people improve their actions and habits.

b. Making decisions – guiding people to make smart and healthy choices.
c. Coping and adjusting – helping people deal with stress and life changes.
d. Improving relationships – teaching people how to communicate and connect
better with others.
e. Reaching full potential – helping people grow and become the best version of
themselves.

SCOPE OF COUNSELING

Individual counseling – Individual counseling is a one-on-one discussion between the

counselor and the client, who is the person seeking treatment. The two form an alliance,
relationship or bond that enables trust and personal growth.

Example: A student feels stressed because of too much schoolwork. The counselor
talks with the student, listens to their problems, and helps them find ways to manage
their time better.

Marital and Pre- Marital Counseling – Marital therapy is a type of counseling

specifically for couples, focusing on improving their relationship. Premarital counseling
is a form of couples therapy designed to help partners prepare for marriage.

Example in Martial Counseling: A husband and wife often argue about money. They
go to a counselor, who guides them to understand each other’s concerns and find ways
to solve their problems together.

Example in Pre- Martial Counseling: A couple who plans to get married goes to a
counselor. The counselor helps them talk about their expectations, responsibilities, and
how to communicate better before marriage.

Family Counseling – Family counseling, or family therapy, aims to address

psychological, behavioral, and emotional issues that cause family problems. Family
members will work with a therapist or counselor to develop and maintain a healthy
relationship.

Example: A student struggles with low grades, and the parents are worried. In family
counseling, the counselor helps them talk openly and guides the family to support the
student better.

PRINCIPLES OF COUNSELING

There are principles of counseling that should be observed in a counseling relationship

and process. These basic principles are essential requirements for the counseling
relationship to be efficient and to achieve its goals. The basic principles are the
following:

a. Listening skills
b. Resistance
c. Respect
d. Empathy or Unconditional Positive Regard
e. Clarification, confrontation, and interpretation

Sciences use that knowledge to help others in real life. Counseling is a powerful tool
that supports people in solving problems, making decisions, and improving their lives.
By learning about these topics, we become more aware of how to help others and how
