Leadership is the process of influencing a group of persons so that they strive willingly to attain the
desired objectives.

Autocratic or authoritative leadership :- autocratic or authoritative leadership means where the leader
run the show himself, he take all the decisions himself without consulting the followers and give the
order that to be obeyed.

Participative or democratic leadership :- Participative or democratic leadership is where a democratic


leader makes decisions jointly with his followers. Instead of taking decision by own he allows the
subordinate to discuss the problem and to express their opinion freely.

Free-Rein or Laissez-faire leadership:- Free-Rein or Laissez-faire leadership means giving complete


freedom to followers to establish their own goal and policies. The leader does not lead and voids his
power.

Q. Write the advantages and disadvantages of Autocratic or authoritative leadership.

Advantages

First decision taking :- in autocratic leadership all the decisions are taking by the leader only. Therefore
there is an advantage of fast decision taking in any situation.

Reduce employees stress :- in autocratic leadership the employees have to follow the instructions given
by the leader. They do not have to think about the matter and give suggestions. It reduce the stress of
the employees.

Disadvantages

High dependence :- there is a high dependency of the group on their leaders in autocratic leadership. As
because they only follow the suggestions given by there leader.

Low employee Morale :- in autocratic leadership the employees have to follow the instructions given by
the leader. You don’t get the opportunity to give their own suggestions. It reduce the morale of the
employees.

Q. Write the advantages and disadvantages of Participative or democratic leadership.

Advantages
Encourages creativity :- whenever the people of the group can able to give their suggestions and get the
opportunity to participate in management they will be more creative about their work.

Create Job satisfaction :- in democratic leadership the members of the group get the opportunities to
giving decision and participation in the management. It create job satisfaction among the employees.

Disadvantages

Delay to take decision :- democratic leadership means taking decision by the leader after taking
suggestions from the members of the group which takes a lot of time and the delay to take decision is
happen.

Ineffective in crisis situation :- in crisis situation there is always a need of suggestion from the efficient
person. In democratic leadership the suggestions are taken only from the employees so it may be in
effective at crisis situation.

Q. Write the advantages and disadvantages of Free-Rein or Laissez-faire leadership.

Advantages

Freedom :- In Free-Rein or Laissez-faire leadership there is no control of the leader for his group member.
The employees do not have to follow the instructions from leader. So there is always a freedom among
the employees.

Faster decision making :- Free-Rein or Laissez-faire leadership means what decisions are taking by the
group members. There is no need to get approval from the leader. Therefore it is the first decision
making process.

Disadvantages

Creation of confusion :- Employees are not experienced or capable to take the decision according to the
situation. So there is a chance to create confusion.

Low accountability :- team members are not capable to take right decision at the right situation without
the suggestion of the leader. That leads the possibility of being sale to achieve the target.

Q. Explain the leadership continuum.

Leadership Continuum suggests that leadership style is the wearing degree of use of authority by the
leader and area of freedom for subordinates. At the left end of the Continuum is the boss leadership
while at the right end is the subordinate cantered leadership. As one moves from the extreme left to the
extreme right, the degree of control goes down and the freedom of subordinate grows up.
1.​ Management makes decision and announces it :- it is an extreme form of autocratic leadership
their by the boss takes the decision and ask the subordinate to implement it.
2.​ Managers sells the decision :- in this style the boss alone take the decision and pursue the
subordinates to accept it.
3.​ Manager presents ideas and invites questions :- this style involves greater involvement of
subordinates. The boss arrives at the decision and ask subordinate to express their views on it.
4.​ Manager presents tentative decision subject to change :- the boss takes a initiative decision and
modify it according to the views given by the subordinates.
5.​ Manager presents problems gates suggestions and takes decision :- in this case the boss takes
the decision after hearing the suggestions from subordinates
6.​ Manager defines the limits and asks the group to make decision :- under the style of leadership
the boss gives the freedom to support in it to take decision.
7.​ Manager permits subordinate to function within the limits defined by him :- style involves full
participation of subordinates. The boss defines overall limits. Subordinate are free to decide
within this limits.

Q. What is situational leadership.

Situational leadership means the leadership style which depends on the situation. No single style is
successful in all situations. Therefore a good leader is one who behaves according to the requirements of
the situation.

Q. Briefly discuss about the managerial grid.

Robert Blake and Jane Mouton developed the managerial grid. This is two dimensional graphic model of
alternative combination of leadership style or behaviour. The two dimensions are : concern for
production and concern for people. They have identified five combinations out of 81 possible
combinations. These five illustrative combinations are as follows :

1.​ Improverished (1,1) :- the manager has low concerned for both production and people. Under it
minimum a fort is required to get work done.
2.​ Country club (1,9) :- the leader keeps his terms in good humour and good relations. He has
maximum concern for people and minimum concern for production.
3.​ Middle of the road (5,5) :- the leader balance tasks with concern for people through
compromise. He has concerned for both production and people.
4.​ Task management (9,1) :- the leader is mainly concerned with the production with little concern
for people.
5.​ Team management (9,9) :- this is steam leaders style which the leader consult his team and
reach the goals. The leader has maximum concerned for both production and people. It is
considered as the best leadership style.
