In APA (7th edition) format, the page setup should follow these guidelines:

1. Page Size & Margins


 Paper size: 8.5 x 11 inches (standard letter size)
 Margins: 1 inch on all sides (top, bottom, left, right)
2. Font & Size
 Preferred fonts:
o Times New Roman (12 pt)

o Arial (11 pt)

o Calibri (11 pt)

o Georgia (11 pt)

o Lucida Sans Unicode (10 pt)

 Use the same font throughout the document.


3. Line Spacing
 Double-spacing throughout the document, including references and block
quotes.
 No extra spaces before or after paragraphs.
4. Paragraph Indentation
 First line of each paragraph: 0.5-inch indent (use the Tab key or set it in
the ruler).
 Block quotations (40+ words): Indent 0.5 inches from the left margin.
5. Page Numbers & Header
 Page numbers: In the top right corner of every page, including the title
page.
 Running head (optional for students, required for professionals):
o Flush left in the header.

o In ALL CAPS (e.g., RUNNING HEAD: SHORTENED TITLE).

6. Title Page Setup (for Student Papers)


 Title: Centered, bold, in title case (e.g., Effects of Sleep on Academic
Performance).
 Student name
 Institutional affiliation
 Course name and number
 Instructor’s name
 Due date (Month Day, Year format)
 Everything should be centered and double-spaced.
7. Reference Page
 Title: “References” (centered, bold, on a new page).
 Entries: Alphabetized by the first author's last name.
 Hanging indent: 0.5 inches for each reference entry.
 Double-spaced throughout.

Your first paragraph starts here. Use double-spacing throughout the document.
The first line of each paragraph should be indented 0.5 inches (press the Tab key
once).
If you include a block quote (40+ words), format it like this:
This is a block quote. It is indented 0.5 inches from the left margin, and it is
double-spaced like the rest of the document. There are no quotation marks used.
The citation comes after the period. (Author, Year, p. #)

How to Apply APA Formatting in Word:


1. Margins: Go to Layout > Margins > Normal (1 inch on all sides).
2. Font: Set font to Times New Roman (12 pt) or another APA-approved font.
3. Line Spacing: Go to Home > Line and Paragraph Spacing > Double.
4. Page Numbers: Insert page numbers in the top right corner via Insert >
Page Number > Top of Page > Plain Number 3.
5. Hanging Indent for References:
o Highlight the reference list.

o Right-click > Paragraph > Under "Indentation," set "Special" to


Hanging and "By" to 0.5 inches.
