PROJECT – 1
Title
To draw the diagram of a given open circuit comprising at least a battery,
resistor/rheostat, key, ammeter and voltmeter. Mark the components that are not
connected in proper order and correct the circuit and also the circuit diagram.
Aim →
The aim of this project is to study the basic structure of an electric circuit, to identify incorrect
connections in a given open circuit, and to redraw the circuit with correct connections for proper
measurement of current and potential difference.
Materials Required →
1. Battery
2. Plug key (switch)
3. Rheostat (variable resistor)
4. Ammeter
5. Voltmeter
6. Connecting wires
Introduction →
Electric circuits form the foundation of electrical and electronic systems used in daily life. Every
electrical device operates using a closed conducting path through which electric current flows.
For accurate measurement of electrical quantities such as current and potential difference,
proper arrangement and connection of components is essential.
In this project, a given open circuit is analyzed to identify incorrect connections of instruments.
These incorrect connections are then corrected and represented through a properly drawn
circuit diagram.
Theory →
An electric circuit is a closed path made up of electrical components and conductors through
which electric current flows.
Ammeter
● An ammeter is used to measure electric current.
● It has very low resistance.
● It must always be connected in series with the circuit.
● Incorrect connection (parallel) can damage the ammeter.
Voltmeter
● A voltmeter is used to measure potential difference.
● It has very high resistance.
● It must always be connected in parallel across the component.
● Incorrect connection (series) gives wrong readings.
Rheostat
● A rheostat is a variable resistor.
● It is used to control the amount of current flowing through the circuit.
Key (Switch)
● A key is used to open or close the circuit.
● When the key is open, the circuit is incomplete and current does not flow.
Proper arrangement of these components ensures correct functioning of the circuit and accurate
measurement of electrical quantities.
Description of the Given Open Circuit →
In the given open circuit:
● The circuit is incomplete.
● Measuring instruments may be connected incorrectly.
● Such incorrect connections can lead to:
○ Inaccurate readings
○ Damage to instruments
○ Improper functioning of the circuit
Hence, it becomes necessary to identify these errors and correct them.
Incorrect Circuit Diagram →
{Image/Diagram: Incorrect Open Circuit Diagram}
Description
In the incorrect circuit:
● The ammeter is not connected in series.
● The voltmeter is not connected in parallel.
● The circuit may remain open due to improper key connection.
These incorrect connections prevent accurate measurement of current and potential difference.
Identification of Errors →
The following errors were identified in the given circuit:
1. Ammeter connected incorrectly.
2. Voltmeter placed in the wrong position.
3. Improper arrangement of components in the circuit path.
Correct Circuit Diagram
{Image/Diagram: Correct Electric Circuit Diagram}
Description
In the corrected circuit:
● Battery, key, rheostat, and ammeter are connected in series.
● Voltmeter is connected in parallel across the resistor.
● The circuit becomes complete when the key is closed.
This arrangement allows safe and accurate measurement of electrical quantities.
Procedure →
1. The given open circuit was observed carefully.
2. Incorrect connections of the ammeter and voltmeter were identified.
3. The incorrect circuit diagram was drawn.
4. A correct circuit diagram was redrawn following proper electrical rules.
5. All components were labeled clearly.
Observations →
● Ammeter gives correct readings only when connected in series.
● Voltmeter measures potential difference only when connected in parallel.
● Proper connections ensure smooth flow of current.
Result / Conclusion →
The incorrect connections in the given open circuit were successfully identified and corrected.
The ammeter was connected in series and the voltmeter in parallel, ensuring accurate
measurement of current and potential difference. Thus, the correct circuit diagram was drawn
and verified.
Precautions →
1. Ammeter should always be connected in series.
2. Voltmeter should always be connected in parallel.
3. Connections should be neat and tight.
4. Circuit should be checked before switching on the supply.
5. Instruments should be handled carefully.
Applications →
1. Used in electrical laboratories for basic measurements.
2. Helpful in understanding household electrical circuits.
3. Forms the base for advanced electrical experiments.
Sources of Error (If any) →
1. Loose connections may affect the circuit.
2. Incorrect identification of terminals may lead to wrong diagrams.
