💧 WATER CONSERVATION – ACTIVITY REPORT

1. Title

Visit to Hidkal Dam – Study of Water Conservation and Management

2. Introduction

As part of the Water Conservation activity under the Social Connect &
Responsibility (SCR) course, I visited Hidkal Dam, a major water reservoir
near Belagavi, Karnataka. The purpose of this activity was to learn about
large-scale water storage, regulation, and distribution methods, and to
understand how dams play an essential role in conserving water and
supporting the needs of nearby communities.

3. Objectives of the Activity

 To understand the working and purpose of a large water reservoir.

 To observe water conservation methods used at Hidkal Dam.

 To learn how stored water supports irrigation, drinking supply, and

daily needs.

 To study the importance of managing water resources sustainably.

 To gain awareness about water scarcity and the need for responsible
usage.

4. Description of Hidkal Dam

Hidkal Dam, also known as Raja Lakhamagouda Dam, is constructed across

the Ghataprabha River. It is an important irrigation and drinking water
source for several villages and towns near Belagavi. The dam features a
large reservoir, spillway gates, a control structure, and extensive water
distribution canals.

Key Features of the Dam:

 Large-scale water storage capacity

 Dam gates for controlled water release

 Surrounding agricultural land supported by canal irrigation

 Strong embankments and monitoring systems

 Scenic environment with a clear view of the reservoir and hills

5. Water Conservation Practices Observed

1. Controlled Water Release

Water is released through gates based on requirement, preventing wastage

and ensuring proper distribution.

2. Irrigation Support

The dam supplies water to farmlands through canal systems, reducing

dependence on rainfall.

3. Groundwater Recharge

The reservoir helps maintain groundwater levels in nearby regions.

4. Storage for Drinking Water Supply

The stored water is used to provide drinking water to nearby towns and
villages.

5. Flood Control

During heavy rainfall, the dam controls the water flow and prevents flooding
in surrounding areas.

6. Observations During the Visit

 A large amount of water was stored in the reservoir.

 The dam gates and structure were well maintained.

 Safety barriers and pathways were clearly marked.

 Proper systems were in place to regulate water flow.

 The surrounding environment was clean and well monitored.

 Visitors and locals were present, showing the dam’s importance and
accessibility.
7. Learning Outcomes

From visiting Hidkal Dam, I learned:

 How water is stored and supplied on a large scale.

 The importance of dams in managing water resources.

 How irrigation systems depend on reservoir water.

 The need for conserving water and preventing wastage.

 The role dams play in environmental stability and community support.

 How engineering structures help in natural resource management.

8. Conclusion

The visit to Hidkal Dam provided a clear understanding of how crucial water
conservation is for daily life, agriculture, and regional development.
Observing the operation of the dam helped me appreciate the importance of
preserving water resources for future generations. This activity strengthened
my awareness about sustainable water use and the need to protect natural
resources.
