Introduction
Migs: One of the most encountered health issue around the world is bone fracture.
It is the Burden of athletes, adults, elders and especially people with osteoporosis,
The total Estimated cases of bone fracture in 2019 was 178million. It is said that a
hip fracture cost to Be $10,075 USD and the total cost of social care after 12
months is $43,669 USD (Wu et Al.,2021),
Methodology
Gab: This study aims to explore the potential of Musa colla (banana peels) in
promoting overall bone health, improving bone strength, and preventing bone-
related injuries.
Specifically answering the following questions: First, what is the best amount of
powdered banana peel that most effectively improves the weight and thickness of
the eggshells? Second, which type of banana peel is overall the most effective in
improving the eggshell's quality? Third, which type of banana peel is most
effective in increasing the thickness of the eggshells? And lastly which type of
powdered banana peel helps most in increasing the weight of the eggshells?
Three types of bananas bought from the market were peeled, air-fried at 160 °C for
30 minutes, and blended until powdered. The banana peel powder was then
prepared for testing. Eggshells act as a proxy model for bone mineralization, since
both are calcium-based biomaterials.
Migs: What exactly is being tested?
The experiment tests whether banana peel powder can promote mineral deposition
on eggshells, which are used as a bone mineralization model.
The experiment assessed eggshell mineralization through pre- and post-tests of
eggshell weight and thickness. Three setups were used: 5 g, 10 g, and 15 g of
unripe, ripe, and overripe banana peel powder to evaluate their effects.
Liam: This study aims to examine the potential of Musa colla (banana peels) in
supporting bone health by improving eggshell strength. It seeks to identify the
most effective amount of powdered banana peel and determine which banana type
best improves eggshell quality, thickness, and weight.
Hypothesis
Migs:There is no significant difference between the amounts of powdered banana
peel on weight and thickness of the eggshells for bone mineral deposition
Scope and Limitations
Liam: This study focuses on examining the micronutrient content of Musa
acuminata Colla (banana) peels and evaluating their potential to enhance bone
health through mineral deposition on eggshells. Specifically, it investigates the
osteogenic potential of banana peel powder in improving eggshell weight and
thickness as a model for bone mineralization. However, the study is limited to
laboratory-based experimentation and does not include animal or human trials.
It does not aim to diagnose, treat, or cure bone-related conditions such as fractures
or osteoporosis, but rather to explore the preventive and supportive potential of
banana peel powder for bone health.
Result and Discussion
Migs: This study aimed to determine the effect of different types of powdered
banana peel on eggshell mineral deposition by measuring mass changes before and
after incubation.
Tables 1 and 2 show the eggshell mass before and after soaking. Table 1 shows all
eggshells started with the same mass of 5 grams, used as a controlled variable.
Table 2 shows the highest weight gain in the overripe group with 6.00 g, followed
by ripe at 3.00 g and unripe at 2.00 g.
These results confirm that overripe banana peel is the most effective for mineral
deposition, showing the highest average mass gain across all types.
Liam: The study aimed to determine how different types of powdered banana peel
affect eggshell mineral deposition by measuring thickness changes before and
after incubation.
Tables 3 and 4 show eggshell thickness before and after the experiment. Table 3
shows initial thickness, while Table 4 shows thickness after soaking and
incubation.
Results from Table 4 align with the mass gain experiment. Overripe banana peel
powder produced the thickest mineral layer among all treatments. This suggests
that higher mass gain doesn’t always mean a thicker layer—5 g of overripe peel
may create a denser deposit, while 10 g produces a thicker but less dense layer.
Gab: The researchers used two single-factor ANOVA tests to see if banana peel
ripeness affected eggshell mineral deposition. The groups were unripe, ripe, and
overripe peels, with a significance level of 0.05. For eggshell weight, the p-value
was 0.51, which means there was no significant difference between the groups.
For eggshell thickness, the p-value was 0.05, indicating a statistically significant
difference based on banana peel ripeness. Overall, banana peel ripeness affected
eggshell thickness but not eggshell weight.
Conclusion
Liam: The study shows that banana peel ripeness significantly influences mineral
deposition on eggshells, with overripe banana peel powder producing the greatest
improvements in mass gain and thickness. The 5g overripe treatment yielded the
most efficient and dense deposition, suggesting lower amount may be more
effective, and statistical analysis found significant differences in thickness among
ripeness levels but not in mass gain. Overall, the results highlight overripe banana
peel powder as a sustainable natural material with potential applications in
biomaterials and bone-related research.
Recommendation
Gabriel: Future studies should include more experimental groups, especially those
using higher-weight samples, to better understand how different concentrations of
banana peel powder affect mineral buildup and identify the most effective dosage.
Migs: Researchers are also encouraged to examine different banana varieties, as
their mineral and bioactive compound content may vary and influence bone
growth. Using vertebrate models like albino rats could help evaluate actual bone
formation, provided ethical standards and accurate bone density measurements are
ensured.
Liam: Additionally, incubating eggshells after drying may enhance mineral
activation and improve their effectiveness. These improvements could lead to
more reliable results and stronger evidence supporting the composite’s potential
for bone regeneration.
