Statistics & Probability – JEE Notes
1️⃣ Mean (Average)
Definition
The mean of a dataset is the sum of all observations divided by the
number of observations:
∑ xi
x́=
n
x i = individual observations
n = number of observations
Properties
1. Sum of deviations from the mean is zero:
∑ (xi − x́)=0
2. Mean is unique for a dataset.
3. If each observation is multiplied by a constant a and a constant b is
added:
y i=a x i +b ⇒ ý=a x́ +b
4. Weighted mean:
∑ w i xi
x́ w =
∑ wi
2️⃣ Median
Definition
The median is the middle value when the data is arranged in ascending
order.
Odd n: middle value
Even n: average of two middle values
n
−c

Median (for grouped data)=l+ ⋅h
f
Where:
l = lower boundary of median class
n = total frequency
c = cumulative frequency before median class
