Chapter 6 Statistic Notes

Chapter 6 discusses diagrammatic presentations of data, focusing on bar diagrams and pie diagrams. Bar diagrams represent data with rectangular bars, varying in height or length based on frequency, and can be simple, multiple, sub-divided, percentage, or deviation types. Pie diagrams, on the other hand, show percentage values in a circular format, with total values always equaling 100%, and include steps for construction using absolute values converted to degrees.

Diagrammatic presentation of data – Bar diagram and Pie diagram

Meaning –

A bar diagram or bar graph is a type of diagrammatic presentation of data in which data are
represented by bars or rectangular columns, depending on their values.

Features of a Bar diagram –

1. Bars are represented in rectangular form.

2. The length or height of the bars differ according to different value of frequencies.
3. The breadth remains same.
4. Bars may be horizontal or vertical.
5. Bars have equal distance between each other.
6. To make bars attractive, bars can be shaded with different colors.
7. Bars must be presented in ascending or descending order.

Types of bar diagrams –

1. Simple Bar Diagram – shows one set of data (e.g., production of rice in different
states).

2. Multiple Bar Diagram – compares two or more related sets of data (e.g., production
of rice and wheat).

3. Sub-divided (Component) Bar Diagram – shows the components of each total (e.g.,
total expenditure divided into food, rent, etc.).

4. Percentage Bar Diagram – shows the percentage composition of different items.

5. Deviation Bar Diagram – used for showing net changes in data in positive and
negative values (e.g., profit and loss).
Pie or Circular Diagrams –
It is a circle divided into various segments showing the per cent value of a series. This
diagram does not show absolute values. Total value of pie is always 100%

Steps for constructing pie diagram –

Step 1 – absolute values of the series are converted into per cent value.
Step 2 – convert these values into degrees.
Step 3 – show the degree value in the circle clockwise.
Question for practice –

Construct a pie diagram to represent the cost of construction of a house in Udaipur.
