Question 1. The town’s film club offers two pricing plans:
Plan A: £25 for subscription to membership, then £1.5 per screening.
Plan B: £5 per screening.
(a) Let x be the number of screenings attended, express the the prices PA (x) and PB (x) for plans A and B
in term of x.
(b) Sketch the graphs of functions PA (x) and PB (x). State the gradients (slopes) and y-intercepts of each
lines.
(c) For how many screenings will plan A be cheaper than plan B?
Question 2 (EXAM QUESTION 2017). If the price of an item is p, then the quantity demanded is q.
These are connected by the equation
q = ap + b
where a and b are constant. When p = 10 then q = 5000, and when p = 15 then q = 2500.
(a) Write down two linear equations and solve them to find the values of a and b.
(b) What is the range possible values of p?
(c) The cost of producing q items is 500 + 6q. The profit P is found by multiplying the price p and the
quantity q, and then subtracting the cost. Express the profit as a function of p.
(d) Find the price that will maximise the profit.
Question 3. The parabola (P ) is given by the equation y = 8 − 7x − x2 and the straight line (L) is given by
the equation y = 12 x + 4.
(a) Sketch (P ) and (L) on the same set of axes.
(b) By solving the appropriate equation, find the points where the parabola and the straight line intersect.
(c) Sketch another line, parallel to the first, which only intersects the parabola once and calculate the y-
intercept of this second line.
