potential! It is the most complex organ we have

Entitlement?

Why could it become the Era of Entitlement? As


the western societies have so many material goods
readily available to them, our children receive the
message that they ‘need’ these many goods and
services. The economic model dictates that growth
is essential, stagnation is negative, and production
(driven by consumption) is what counts.

Within family life, over the past 40 years, childhood


has changed enormously. We came from Dr.
Spock and have moved from autocratic fathers
to multifunctional couples that cater to all the
needs of their children. Punishment has become
encouragement, orders have become choice and
rules have become propositions. Children have a lot
of freedom that is given to them in the hope that
this will not restrain them and that it will allow them
to make successful decisions in the future.
