THE MICROSCOPE AND ITS USES
Definition
A microscope is a scientific instrument used to magnify very small objects so that they can
be seen clearly when they cannot be seen with the naked eye.
Types of Microscopes
- Light microscope
- Electron microscope
Light Microscope
A light microscope uses visible light and lenses to magnify objects.
Main Parts of a Light Microscope and Their Functions
- Eyepiece (ocular lens): Used to look through; magnifies the image
- Objective lenses: Provide different levels of magnification
- Revolving nosepiece: Holds and rotates the objective lenses
- Stage: Platform where the slide is placed
- Stage clips: Hold the slide in place
- Diaphragm: Controls the amount of light passing through the specimen
- Light source or mirror: Provides light for viewing the specimen
- Coarse adjustment knob: Moves the stage up and down for rough focusing
- Fine adjustment knob: Used for sharp and clear focusing
- Arm: Supports the upper part of the microscope
- Base: Supports the microscope and provides stability
Magnification
Magnification is how much larger the image appears compared to the actual object.
Formula:
Total magnification = Eyepiece magnification × Objective magnification
Uses of a Microscope
- To observe cells (plant and animal cells)
- To study microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi
- To examine tissues and organs
- To observe blood cells
- To assist in medical diagnosis
- To study structures in biology and life sciences
- To conduct scientific research
Care and Handling of a Microscope
- Carry the microscope using both hands
- Clean lenses with lens paper only
- Do not touch lenses with fingers
- Start focusing with the low-power objective lens
- Switch off the light after use
- Cover and store the microscope properly after use
Advantages of Using a Microscope
- Allows observation of very small objects
- Helps in scientific discovery and research
- Essential in medicine and biology
Summary
A microscope is an important scientific tool used to magnify small objects. It is widely used
in biology, medicine, and research to study cells and microorganisms.
