ECE vs ICE: Engine Types Explained

The presentation discusses External Combustion Engines (ECE) and Internal Combustion Engines (ICE), explaining their mechanisms, advantages, and disadvantages. ECEs burn fuel externally, offering cleaner emissions and longer lifespans but are bulky and less efficient for small uses. In contrast, ICEs burn fuel internally, are compact and efficient for transportation, but produce harmful emissions and require more maintenance.

David KMKL: Hello everyone today we are going to present about ECE And ICE also known
as external combustion and internal combustion engine.

Nabita, Min Phin Nga Loe, Nga Phin Min Nga Loe: Let us talk about what an engine is ?

To simply put, a machine converts any various fuel and turns it into mechanical motion.

The first ever engine that revolutionize engines for auto mobile was created by Carl Benz, in
the background is the actual engine.

Gway Htu Phyi Prensentation ma lok tet kaung: An External Combustion Engine works by
burning fuel outside the engine, usually in a boiler or furnace. The heat generated turns
water into high-pressure steam. This steam then moves pistons or spins turbines,
converting heat energy into mechanical power. Afterward, the steam cools down in a
condenser and turns back into water, which is reused in a continuous cycle.

The advantages of External Combustion Engines include the ability to use a wide variety of
fuels like coal, wood, or nuclear energy. They produce cleaner combustion since fuel burns
externally, which makes emissions easier to control. ECEs also have a longer lifespan
because the engine’s moving parts don’t directly face the combustion process. They
provide steady power and high torque, especially useful for heavy machinery and power
plants.

On the downside, External Combustion Engines tend to be bulky and heavy due to large
boilers and supporting equipment. They have a slow start-up time because it takes time to
build steam pressure. They require a constant water supply and can be less efficient for
small-scale uses. Also, the initial cost to build and maintain these systems is generally
high

Phin Cha nay lo Presentation ma lok tet kaung An Internal Combustion Engine works by
burning fuel directly inside the engine’s cylinder. First, a mixture of fuel and air enters the
cylinder. The piston compresses this mixture, and a spark plug or heat from compression
ignites it. The burning fuel rapidly expands, pushing the piston down to produce
mechanical power. Finally, exhaust gases are expelled, and the cycle repeats many times
per second.

The advantages of Internal Combustion Engines include being compact and lightweight,
having a high power-to-weight ratio, starting quickly, and being cheaper to manufacture
compared to external combustion engines. They are also widely used in cars, motorcycles,
and aircraft because they are efficient for small-scale applications.

However, they also have disadvantages. They usually require refined fuels, have a shorter
lifespan due to high heat and pressure, and need regular maintenance. They produce
harmful emissions, create noise and vibration, and waste a lot of heat. Despite these
drawbacks, ICEs remain the most common engine type for transportation because of their
convenience and performance.

Phin Kan Nay Lo presentation ma lok tet kaung: ECE is most used in ships (the steam ships
to be exact), power plants and locomotives (but it’s not used today anymore, those who
still use it are idiots who doesn’t think)

Nga Phin min loe:Both ECE and ICE play vital roles play vital role in energy conversion,
however ECE is going extinct in my opinion.

ICE dominates in both transport and size as well as efficiency, ECE is used where fuel
flexibility and smoother operation is needed.
