BASKETBALL GROUP 2

Basketball is a game played between two teams

of five players each on a rectangular court,
usually indoors. Each team tries to score by
tossing the ball through the opponent’s goal, an
elevated horizontal hoop and net called a
basket.
Facilities vs. Equipment

• Facility are all or any portion of a building area or

structure, including the site of which it is located,
wherein specific services are provided or activities are
performed.

• Equipment machines or major tools necessary to

complete a given task.
FACILITIES
How long is a basketball court?

The length of a basketball court is 28m. These measurements can be

reduced to 26m for Premier, Club and Community courts where only
smaller spaces are available.

How wide is a basketball court?

The width of an International-standard basketball court in the UK is

usually 15m. The court lines can be reduced by no more than 1m (14m)
if required for lower levels of play.
What is the total area of a basketball court?

The total area of a professional basketball court is 420m². The minimum

area allowed under Basketball England's guidance is 364m². These
measurements apply to both indoor and outdoor courts.

The addition of 2.05m run-offs and 2m for teams and officials on the
sideline increases the total area to 677.31m².
Three point line
The three point lines are the arcs that mark a range boundary from each
hoop. Scoring from outside this line is worth three points. The distance
of the line will vary depending on the level of game, but is typically
6.75m from the basket
Basketball Free Throw Lane

• The free throw lane in basketball is an area of the

court also known as the paint, key, foul lane, or
lane. Controlling this area can be key to winning a
game, both on offense and defense.
• The free throw lane is the space on a basketball
court from the baseline to the free throw line. It is
12ft wide and 19ft long. The free throw lines help
form the elbows, while the restricted arc and the
block are also part of the free throw lane.
• Because the basket is located in the free throw
lane, controlling it is key. Points in the paint are an
important factor in how a team performs, both
offensively and defensively.
• The free throw lane also contains lines on the
side. These are used to align players during free
throws in preparation for the rebound. A player
who steps into the free throw lane during free
throws has committed a lane violation.
Sidelines
are the white or colored lines which mark the outer boundaries of a sports field. A
player is out-of-bounds if they touch or cross the line, running parallel to each
other and perpendicular to the goal lines. The sidelines are also where the
coaching staff and players out of play operate during a game.
Baselines
is the boundary line running along the edges of the court on the sides behind the
basket. It marks where a player or the ball goes out-of-bounds and is used to
separate the area of play and the area that is out of bounds. Every time a basket
scored, a player on non-scoring team must step out of bounds behind the
baseline and pass the ball to a teammate.
CENTER CIRCLE

• a 12 foot diameter circle located in the center of the court used to start the game
and other jump ball situations
• On jump balls, non-jumpers must remain outside the circle until the ball is tapped by
one of the jumpers
• In a jump ball at midcourt, the two players who will take the jump stand inside the
center circle, while all other players stand outside of the circle
Division Line
The division line, otherwise known as the midline or half court line, is the boundary line that splits a
basketball court in half.

• 2 Violations occur in Division Line Back court violation When the offensive player travels the wrong
half of the court.
• 8 seconds violation When the team on offense does not manage to past the half court by the time of
referee reaches a count of 8 seconds.
Basket
Is made up of a backboard and a ring that holds a net. The standard basketball
backboard is 72 inches wide and is positioned 4 feet inside the base line. The
hoop or ring stands 10 feet (3 meters) off the floor and 18 inches in diameter.
BASKETBALL BACKBOARDS

• are flat elevated vertical boards with mounted baskets, or rims, used
to assist or return the basketball after a shot in a game of basketball
• commonly made of Plexiglas or tempered glass
• designed to prevent shattering when a player dunks
• Regulation basketball backboards have a width of 72” | 183 cm and a
height of 42” | 110 cm with an inner rectangle that is 24” | 61 cm wide
and 18” | 45.7 cm tall
• Basketball rims are hung 10’ | 3.05 m above the court floor
EQUIPMENTS
BASKETBALL (BALL)
• is a spherical ball used in basketball games
• the only piece of equipment necessary to play the game of basketball
• have an inflatable inner rubber bladder, generally wrapped in layers of fiber and then
covered with a surface made either from leather (traditional), rubber, or a synthetic
composite and most inflatable balls has a small opening that allows the pressure to be
increased or decreased surface of the ball is nearly always divided by "ribs" with an
orangish surface with black ribs range in sizes
• National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) men's ball - maximum of 30 inches
(76 cm) in circumference.
• NCAA women's ball - maximum of 29 inches (74 cm) in circumference
• National Basketball Association (NBA) - 29.5 inches (75 cm) in circumference
• Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) - maximum circumference of 29 inches
(74 cm)
Scoreboards
in basketball will display the time left in the game OR how long is left in your
quarter (which is required in FIBA and NBA). Scoreboards also display the score
both teams, how many timeouts you have requested and how many team fouls
each team has.

Scoreboards
were first used in basketball to record scores. The first scoreboards were
just handwritten on a public board for all to see. The first basic scoreboard
was used in 1934, it included a clock as well as recording scores. Electronic
scoreboards added features such as a buzzer, timer and
scores. Scoreboards developed from this time on and other digital features
were included. Wireless scoreboards are now in use and can be controlled
from anywhere.
