Pokémon Light Card Circuit Experiment

The document outlines a hands-on experiment for students in grades 3 and 4 to create a Pokémon light card using copper tape, a coin battery, and an LED light. It guides students through steps to build the card, observe the circuit's functionality, and understand the principles of electricity and circuits. Additionally, it includes a squishy circuit experiment with play-dough to explore conductivity and short circuits.

⚡ Pokémon Light Card Experiment

Gr 3 & 4 Jr. Deep Program_ Ms. Chaeeun

“Let’s find out why the light turns on!”

🧩 Step 1: Make Your Pokémon Light Card!

Materials:
Copper tape · Coin battery · LED light · Paper card · Pokémon drawing

1️⃣ Fold the paper in half along the dotted line.

2️⃣ Stick the copper tapes along the path as shown in the VIDEO.
(Copper to copper ✅ / Copper to tape ❌)
3️⃣ Add the coin battery where the circle is drawn. Be careful with the + / – sides.
4️⃣ Connect the LED and light it up!

💡 When you finish, press the corner — does the light turn on?

Step 2: Observe Carefully

Look closely at your card. Think about what happened when the light turned on.

Write your observations:

When I pressed the card,

🧠 Step 3: What Do You Think Is Happening? Your ideas (before the teacher
explains)

Let’s think like scientists!

 Why do you think the LED light turned on?

____________________________________________________________________________________
_______

 What might be happening inside the copper tape?

____________________________________________________________________________________

_______
 Why does it only work when the coin battery touches the copper tape ?

_______

⚙️Step 4: Learn Together — Electricity and Circuits

is energy that moves through like copper.

The battery pushes to move.

The copper tape is like a for electricity.

The LED changes electrical energy into .

When the road is complete, the electricity can flow — this is a

circuit!

⚡ Step 5: Types of Circuits ( Fill in the blanks and circle the right answer!)

1️⃣ Circuit ✅

The path is complete.

Electricity can flow from the battery → through the copper tape → through the LED →
back to the battery.
🔆 Result: [ The light turns on! / No light. ]

2️⃣ Circuit ❌

The path is broken when some copper parts don’t touch or the tape is
.
If the sticky sides touch the copper tape, instead of the shiny copper sides, electricity
cannot flow.

🔇 Result: [ The light turns on! / No light. ]

🔍 Step 6: Reflection and Reasoning

Write in your own words:
How does your Pokémon light card work?

Draw the path of electricity (Battery, Copper tape, LED lights) :

“Can play-dough carry electricity?”

🧠 Step 1: Observe and Think

Write what you see:

When Ms. Chaeeun connected the LED, ____________________________________________

The LED light ____________________________________________

⚡ Step 2: What Is a Short Circuit?

If the two conductive play-doughs touch each other, the electricity finds a
shortcut!
It skips the LED and flows directly from + to – through the dough.

🚫 This means no light — the electricity current didn’t go through the LED!
⚠️Sometimes the battery can also get hot, because the current flows too quickly.

🔍 Step 3: Compare the Circuits ( Fill in the blank and circle the right answer)

Type of Circuit What Happens Why

Circuit Light ON ✅/ No light ❌ Electricity travels through the LED.

Light ON ✅/ No light ❌ Path is broken – electricity can’t flow.

🌈 Step 4: Reflection In your own words:

Why doesn’t the light turn on when the two doughs touch?
