Patterns and Algebra
5th Week

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the student should be able to:
A. Identify the parts of a rectangular coordinate system;
B. Plot the point on a coordinate plane;
C. Identify the coordinates of a point on the plane; and
D. Appreciate the importance of accuracy in a coordinate-based task to solve problems in
daily life.
II. Subject Matter
A. Topic: Illustrating the Rectangular Coordinates System and it’s Uses
B. References: Learner’s Material, Grade 8 Mathematics LAS
C. Materials: Laptop (PowerPoint Presentation), Module DepEd,
III. Lesson Procedures
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity
A. Preparation
May I request everyone to please stand.
Student A, please lead the prayer.
(Student A will lead the prayer)
Good morning everyone. I’m happy to
see you again for a fruitful learning today.
Good morning ma’am!
Please arrange your chairs properly.
(Students arrange their chairs properly)
Thank you. You may now take your seats.
(Students take their seats)
Let’s check the attendance. Once I call
your name, say present.
(The student responds by saying “present” when
their name is called)
Great job, everyone! I’m delighted to see
that all of you are present today.
(Everyone claps their hands)
B. Motivation
Before we move on to our new lesson,
we’re going to play a game called “ Tell
me who without telling me who”. The
objective of this game is to answer
questions about your classmates without
revealing their names but using ordered
pairs to indicate their locations.
Mechanics:
1. Assign each student a unique ordered
pair (e.g., A3 for Column A and Row 3)
that corresponds to their chairs .
2. The teacher or game leader asks
questions like “Who is the most likely to
become a famous actor/actress?” or
“Who is the funniest person in the
class?”
4. Use the random name picker tool to
select a student to answer each question.
The selected student answers the
question by providing the ordered pair
(e.g., “The funniest person is sitting at
B5”).
5. Encourage students to ask and answer
questions, taking turns to guess which
chair corresponds to which classmate’s
qualities.

The game encourages creative responses

while maintaining the mystery of their
classmates’ identities.
(The students perform the activity)
C. Presentation

Do you know the person in the middle?

Very Good! He is the great

mathematician Rene Descartes. Yes, Ma’am !

How about these to two pictures? How

these pictures related to Rene Descartes?

Okay, Let me tell you a story on how he

discovered something great. One day,
while lying in his bed, Descartes noticed a
fly moving around the ceiling. He
watched the fly for a long time. He
wanted to know how to tell someone
else where the fly was. Finally, he realized
that he could describe the position of the
fly by its distance from the walls of the
room. When he got out of bed, Descartes
wrote down what he had discovered.
Then he tried describing the positions of
points, the same way he described the
position of the fly. This concept
eventually became the Rectangular
coordinate system, also known as
Cartesian coordinate system.

D. Discussion
The Rectangular Coordinate System
makes use of two perpendicular number
lines. The horizontal line is called x-axis
and the vertical line is called y-axis. These
axes intersect at origin and form four
region called quadrants. The coordinates
in Quadrant I = (+, +), Quadrant II = (-, +),
Quadrant III = (-, -), and Quadrant IV = (+,
-).

How do we name the points on the

coordinate plane?

The numerical descriptive reference of a

point on a Rectangular Coordinate
System is called coordinates (x, y). The
first coordinate x corresponds to the real
number on the x-axis and is called x-
coordinate or abscissa. The second
coordinate y corresponds to the real
number on the y-axis and is called y-
coordinate or ordinate.

Okay now, how do we plot a point on the

Rectangular Coordinate System?

In plotting a point in a coordinate plane,

locate the abscissa on the x-axis, draw an
imaginary vertical line then locate the
ordinate and draw a horizontal line. The
intersection of the extended lines of
abscissa and ordinate is where the point
is located.

Here are some examples:

Plot:
A(3, -1)
B(0, 5)
C(-2, -2)
D(4, -5)
E(-6, 0)
(The teacher works on letter A)

Now, who wants to do letter B?

(Students raise their hands)
Yes (name of student), can you plot point
A and tell us what quadrant it is located?
(Student plots it correctly) Point A is located in
quadrant IV, Ma’am!
Wow, Great Job (name of student)!

How about point C?D?E?

(Students raise their hands)
(Teacher chooses students to answer)
(Students answer it correctly)
Since, you already know how to plot a
point in a Cartesian plane. Let’s now
proceed to identifying the coordinates of
a point on the plane.

As you can see, points are already plotted

on the Cartesian plane. We just need to
Identify the ordered pair for every point.

For example, to identify the coordinates

of point A, we will count how many unit
we move from the origin. At point A, we
move 4 unit to the right and move 2 unit
up. We have x which is 4 and y is 2 so the
coordinates are (4,2), and they are both
positive it means the location is quadrant
1.

At point B, we moved 4 unit up, it means

our x is Zero and y is 4, the coordinates
are (0,4) and as you can see the point is
in y – axis and that is the location of the
point.

Are we clear? Yes Ma’am!

Any question? None, Ma’am !

Since there’s no question, who would like

to identify the coordinates of point C? (Students raise their hands)

Yes (name of student), can you tell us the

coordinates of point C? Ma’am, the coordinates of point C are(-2, 2).

Wow! That’s Brilliant (name of student)

Thank you, Ma’am !
What about point D?
(Students raise their hands)
Yes(name of student)!
The coordinates of point D are (4, 0).
Excellent!!

(continue until all the coordinates of the

point have been identified)

E. Generalization
Let’s have a recap of what we just
discussed.

What is a Rectangular Coordinate

System?
(Students raise their hands)
Yes?
A rectangular coordinates system is consist of two
perpendicular axes, Ma’am.
And what are those axes?
(Students raise their hands)
Yes?
Ma’am those are x-axis and y-axis.
Impressive!

How do we plot the points on a

Cartesian plane?
(Students raise their hands)
Yes?
(Student answers may vary)
Very good!

Who wants to give other applications of

Rectangular Coordinate System in real life
situation?
(Students raise their hands)
Yes?
(Student answers may vary)
Wow! Excellent!

F. Application
Using the link that the teacher provided,
plot each ordered pair in the list by
clicking on the correct location on the
coordinate plane to discover the mystery
picture. Choose to play on all four
quadrants in Relax mode which allows
unlimited mistakes. The teacher will give
5 minutes time limit in this game. The
higher the level, the higher the score. If
the time is up, each students should take
a screenshot on their work and submit it
to their group chat.
(Students perform the activity)
G. Evaluation
Direction: Construct a Cartesian
Coordinate Plane and plot the following
points.
L(0,-3)
E(-2,-7)
A(5,-6)
R(7,1)
N(6,0)

Write the coordinates of each point.

Identify the quadrant or axis were each
point lies.

M(_,_)
A(_,_)

I(_,_)
C(_,_)
S(_,_)
(Students answer the activity)
H. Assignment
Create a geometric figure by plotting points
using GeoGebra software, ensuring that
points cover all four quadrants of the
Cartesian plane. Capture a screenshot,
convert it to PDF, and describe your work in
2-3 sentences. Upload the PDF to the Google
Drive folder your teacher will provide for
submission.

Okay class, that’s all for today, thank you for

listening and for your participation. Good bye
class!
