In English, sentences often follow a similar
structure: subject, verb, and object. This
pattern allows a person to know the topic of
the sentence, what action is being
performed, and the effect of that action.
If a sentence doesn't have a subject or a
verb, it's likely that it won't be fully
understood.
In this lesson, we will talk about the basic
sentence patterns in English.
What is a subject?
A subject is either performing the action of
the sentence or experiencing a state of
being.
Let's take a look at this example:
Rosa and Samira listened attentively.
The two subjects in the sentence above are
"Rosa and Samira," who performed the
action of "listening."
What is a verb?
A verb is a word that expresses an action or
a state of being of a subject in a sentence.
Let's take a look at this example again:
Rosa and Samira listened attentively.
The verb in this sentence that shows action
is the word "listened." The verb expresses an
action being performed by the subjects
"Rosa and Samira."
What is a Direct Object?
An object is something that received the
action or which the action is done to.
Let's take a look at this example again:
Rosa and Samira listened to the teacher.
The object is ‘the teacher’ becasue it
answers the question what or whom.
What is an Indirect Object?
An Indirect object is something that follows
the direct object and gives us additional
information.
Let's take a look at this example:
Rosa and Samira listened to the teacher
attentivly.
The indirect object is ‘attentively’ because it
answers the question to what/ to whom/ of
what/ how.

This pattern follows the sequence: subject, verb, and direct object.
In this example, the verb is a verb uses a direct object, which shows
who or what receives the action in a sentence. A direct object provides
an answer to the question of who(m) or what.
Let's take a look at this example:
Rosa ate the cake.

The subject is The verb is "ate." The direct object is
"Rosa." "cake."

This pattern follows the sequence: subject, verb, indirect object, and
direct object.
An indirect object is the word or phrase that receives the
direct object.
Let's take a look at this example:
Rosa gave me a pen.

The subject is The verb is "gave." The indirect object The direct object is
"Rosa." is "me." "pen."
