INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTERS
1.1 Definition of a Computer

A computer is an electronic device that accepts data as input, processes the data
according to a set of instructions (programs), produces information as output, and stores
the results for future use.

1.2 Functions of a Computer

A computer performs four basic functions:

1. Input – receiving data and instructions (keyboard, mouse, scanner).

2. Processing – manipulating data using the Central Processing Unit (CPU).
3. Output – presenting information (monitor, printer, speakers).
4. Storage – saving data and information (hard disk, flash drive).

2. CLASSIFICATION OF COMPUTERS
Computers can be classified using different criteria such as:

 Purpose (general-purpose or special-purpose)

 Data handling (analog, digital, hybrid)
 Size and processing power ✅ (focus for Grade 10)

According to size and processing power, computers are classified into five
main types:

1. Supercomputers
2. Mainframe Computers
3. Minicomputers
4. Microcomputers
5. Embedded Computers

3. SUPERCOMPUTERS
(Week 3 Focus)

3.1 Definition
A supercomputer is the largest, fastest, and most powerful type of computer. It can
process trillions of instructions per second.

3.2 Characteristics of Supercomputers

 Extremely high processing speed

 Very large memory and storage capacity
 Very expensive to purchase and maintain
 Occupy large physical space
 Require special cooling systems

3.3 Uses of Supercomputers

Supercomputers are used where complex calculations and large data processing are
required:

 Weather forecasting and climate prediction

 Scientific research (physics, chemistry, biology)
 Space exploration and satellite control
 Nuclear research
 Seismic analysis and earthquake prediction

3.4 Examples

 Weather prediction systems

 Space research computers
 Scientific modelling computers

4. MAINFRAME COMPUTERS
(Week 3 Focus)

4.1 Definition

A mainframe computer is a large, powerful computer designed to process large

volumes of data and support many users at the same time.

4.2 Characteristics of Mainframe Computers

 High processing speed (but less than supercomputers)

 Can handle hundreds or thousands of users simultaneously
 Large storage capacity
 Reliable and secure
 Used by large institutions

4.3 Uses of Mainframe Computers

Mainframes are mainly used by organisations that require continuous data processing:

 Banks (customer accounts and transactions)

 Airlines (ticket reservations)
 Government departments
 Insurance companies
 Universities and large corporations

4.4 Examples

 Banking transaction systems

 Government population databases

5. MINICOMPUTERS
(Week 4 Focus)

5.1 Definition

A minicomputer is a medium-sized computer that is more powerful than a

microcomputer but less powerful than a mainframe.

5.2 Characteristics of Minicomputers

 Medium processing power

 Supports multiple users
 Smaller and cheaper than mainframes
 Often used as departmental servers

5.3 Uses of Minicomputers

 Small and medium-sized businesses

 Industrial process control
 Departmental computing in institutions
 Data processing for organisations with moderate workloads

5.4 Examples

 Company servers
 Factory control computers

6. MICROCOMPUTERS
(Week 4 Focus)

6.1 Definition

A microcomputer is a small, low-cost computer designed for use by one person at a

time. It is the most common type of computer.

6.2 Types of Microcomputers

1. Desktop Computer
o Fixed location
o Used in offices, schools, and homes
2. Laptop / Notebook
o Portable
o Battery powered
3. Tablet
o Touch-screen device
o Lightweight and portable
4. Smartphone
o Hand-held computer
o Combines communication and computing

6.3 Characteristics of Microcomputers

 Affordable
 Easy to use
 Portable (except desktops)
 Used by individuals

6.4 Uses of Microcomputers

 Education and learning

 Word processing and spreadsheets
 Internet browsing and communication
 Entertainment (music, games, videos)

7. EMBEDDED COMPUTERS
(Week 5 Focus)

7.1 Definition

An embedded computer is a special-purpose computer that is built into another device

to perform a specific function.

7.2 Characteristics of Embedded Computers

 Designed for one specific task

 Small in size
 Often invisible to the user
 Not programmable by the user
 Reliable and efficient

7.3 Uses of Embedded Computers

Embedded computers are found in many everyday devices:

 Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs)

 Washing machines
 Microwave ovens
 Digital watches
 Traffic lights
 Cars (engine control systems)

7.4 Importance of Embedded Computers

 Improve efficiency of devices

 Automate processes
 Increase safety and reliability

8. COMPARISON OF THE FIVE KINDS OF

COMPUTERS
Type Size Power Users Example Use
Supercomputer Very large Very high Few specialists Weather forecasting
Mainframe Large High Many users Banking
Minicomputer Medium Moderate Several users Company servers
Microcomputer Small Low–moderate One user Personal use
Embedded Very small Task-specific None ATMs, appliances
9. SUMMARY / KEY POINTS
 Computers differ in size, processing power, and purpose
 Each type of computer is designed for specific tasks
 Microcomputers are the most commonly used computers
 Embedded computers control everyday devices
