Casing Design Tutorial for Oil Wells

The document outlines a tutorial on casing design, detailing the functions of various casing strings, advantages of liners, and specifications according to API standards. It includes calculations for body yield strength, collapse pressure ratings, maximum axial stress, and safety factors for production casing. Additionally, it discusses the design of a 9 5/8" production casing string for burst and collapse loads, along with considerations for tensile loads and casing running operations.

OGU07511 Tutorial 1: Casing Design.

1. Discuss the function of the following casing strings

a. Conductor casing
b. Surface casing
c. Intermediate casing and
d. Production casing

2. Discuss the advantages of using a liner rather than a full-length casing string

3. What is the diameter range of API casing?

4. Give the three length ranges of casing specified by API

5. Define the following terms

a. Nominal weight
b. Plain-end weight
c. Average weight, and
d. Drift diameter

6. Compute the body yield strength for 10.75-in, J-55 casing having a nominal
wall thickness of 0.40 in and a nominal weight per foot of 45.5 lbm/ft

7. Compute collapse pressure ratings for the following casing

a. 11.75 in, C-95, 60 lbm/ft
b. 10.75 in, P-110, 51 lbm/ft
c. 10.75 in, J-55, 40.5 lbm/ft and
d. 4.50 in, J-55, 11.6 lbm/ft

8. Determine the maximum axial stress for a 40 ft joint of 10.75 in , 40.5 lbm/ft,
J-55 casing having API short round threads if the casing is subjected to a
300,000lbf axial tension load in portion of a directional wellbore having
dogleg severity of 3 degree per 100 ft . compute the maximum axial stress:
a. Assuming uniform contact between the casing and the borehole wall and
b. Assuming contact between the borehole wall and the casing only at
couplings

9. A production casing is planned to be set at a depth of 14,000 ft. the circulated

mud weight in the annulus is 12.5 ppg. If the collapse rating of the casing is
9,875 psi and the minimum collapse safety factor is 1.25, calculate the casing
depth which can be safely run inside the well without filling inside the casing
with any fluid. If the collapse safety factor was estimated to be 1.55 and when
the casing was at the bottom and full of a certain mud, what is the mud weight
of the fluid inside the casing?
10. The 9 5/8" production casing string of a well is to be designed for burst and collapse based on
the following data.

Setting Depth of 9 5/8" Casing : 8320 ft

Top of Production Packer : 7500 ft

Normal Formation Fluid Density : 9 ppg

Expected gas gradient : 0.115 psi/ft

Depth of Production Interval (TVD) : 7750 - 8220 ft

Maximum expected pressure at top of

Production interval : 4650 psi

Packer fluid density : 9 ppg

Design Factors (burst) : 1.1

(collapse) : 1.1

Note: Only one weight and grade of casing is to be used in the string

a. Design the casing for Burst and Collapse loads (do not consider the tensile
loads). Discuss critically the scenarios considered when determining the
loading conditions used in the above design process.

b. List and describe four (4) of the tensile loads which would be considered when
designing the casing for tension.
c. List and discuss the operations involved in running casing, from the point at
which it arrives on the rig, to the point at which the cementing operation is
about to commence.
