(4) Notes
(i) Advanced Preferences
The Options Dialog allows you to run Sid Meier's Civilization IV in a window, select a
custom monitor refresh rate, select a custom resolution, and, if your Mac has more than
one monitor, to choose the monitor on which Sid Meier's Civilization IV will display.
The default refresh rate setting (Automatic) should work for most users. However, if you
find that the game switches your monitor to an unstable mode or to one that does not
produce a proper image, you can change the refresh rate from Automatic to a specific
refresh rate. It may be necessary to try several different refresh rates before you find
one that works for your computer.
Similarly, while you can adjust the game resolution from within the options menu in Sid
Meier's Civilization IV, the Advanced Preferences permit you to choose from a wider
selection of resolutions, including some widescreen resolutions that offer improved
compatibility with the widescreen displays found on some Macs. Adjusting the resolution
in the Advanced Preferences can also be used as a means to obtain a proper image if
you are experiencing issues with the graphics in the Sid Meier's Civilization IV.
You can access a dialog box to set game resolution and access windowed mode by
pressing and holding the Command key (⌘) when double-clicking the "Civilization IV"
icon to launch the game.
(ii) One Button Mouse Information
Setting Control-Click to function as a right click is useful for simulating a right-click with
a single button mouse. This setting is recommended to all single button mouse users
playing Sid Meier's Civilization IV.
(iii) Software Updates
For the latest up to date information on the Macintosh version of Civilization IV, please
visit Aspyr Media's website at [Link].
(iv) Multiplayer Information
Internet play is done with the GameRanger software.
Note: You have to download the GameRanger software from [Link].
This is a free download.
Multiplayer versus PCs
Note: The PC Version of Sid Meier's Civilization IV must be updated
to Version 1.61 to be compatible with the Mac Version.
To play Sid Meier's Civilization IV Mac versus PCs via LAN play, simply set up the
PC/Mac server as a LAN server, and then join through the LAN multiplayer option.
To play Sid Meier's Civilization IV Mac versus PC's over the Internet, you must use
a direct IP connection. To join a multiplayer game via direct IP, first select Multiplayer in
the main menu, then select Direct Connection. You must then type in the IP address of
the computer that is hosting the game. This computer may be a Mac or a PC.
To host a Direct IP game, the process is similar. First select Multiplayer in the main
menu, then select Direct Connection, and then Create. You will then be presented with
the standard multiplayer game setup screen in which you can configure the game
server settings. Once you start the game, others may join it by following the steps in the
prior paragraph. Mac or PC users may join this game.
NOTE: If you are trying to join a PC game through Direct IP over the
Internet, the PC server MUST be set up as a DIRECT IP Server and
NOT an INTERNET Server. The Mac version of the game does not use
GameSpy for Internet play and therefore cannot join GameSpy
games.
(v) Known Issues
a. For Portable Mac users
The user interface makes use of the Function row of keys (F1-F12) which are enabled
for different functions on portable Macs such as contrast and volume control. These
keys can still be used as Function keys on portable Macs using a modifier key. The "fn"
key, in the lower left corner of any Mac portable's keyboard, has to be pressed while the
specific "F" key is also pressed to have that key act as the Function key.
To change this, you can go to the System Preferences, and select "Keyboard and
Mouse". In "Keyboard" check the checkbox marked "Use the F1-F12 Keys for custom
actions". This will allow you to use the function keys (F1-F12) without first pressing "fn"
to get the desired result.
b. Optimal Performance
On MacBooks, G5 PowerPC Desktops, and G5 iMacs, the processor performance
should be set to Highest to experience optimal performance during gameplay. Under
SYSTEM PREFERENCES -> ENERGY SAVER -> OPTIONS -> PROCESSOR
PERFORMANCE, select HIGH. Processor performance set to Automatic allows a
computer to save energy. When it is turned on, the microprocessor's voltage, bus
speed, and clock speed are adjusted to answer the current demands on the system.
The advantage of this design is a longer battery life on portable computers and fewer
running fans on desktop computers because of lower operating temperatures.
However, using the energy saving options during gameplay can affect your game
performance. You can find additional details here:

[Link]
Users with machines lower than 2.0GHZ in processor speed or that have an Nvidia FX
5200 as a video card may experience performance issues when playing on large maps
or extended large campaigns.
For these lower end configurations we recommend playing on small worlds/maps on
default settings for optimal game play.
c. Cross Platform Connection
Cross platform multiplayer feature is only available through direct IP connection. To
join a game players will have to know the IP address of the Host's computer and enter it
into the text box on the right.
d. Voice Chat
Voice Chat in Civilization IV is not supported on the Mac OS at this time. Toggling the
option for voice chat will have no effect.
