Climate Change and Natural Disasters

The Philippines is at high risk from climate change, facing strong typhoons,
rising sea levels, and extreme weather. These disasters turn children's lives
upside down, forcing them to leave their homes, get hurt, or lose access to
school and healthcare. In 2024, several typhoons hit back-to-back, causing
massive damage and affecting millions, especially kids.

2. Air Pollution

Air pollution is a big problem for children’s health in the Philippines. Smoke
from cars, factories, and burning wood or charcoal for cooking makes the air
dirty. Breathing in polluted air can cause kids to get sick, especially with
asthma and other lung problems. The World Health Organization says both
outdoor and indoor air pollution are serious health risks in the country.

3. Water Pollution and Poor Sanitation

Dirty water and lack of toilets put children at risk of getting sick from diseases
like diarrhea, which can be deadly. In rural areas, it's even worse because
clean water and proper sanitation are harder to find. Making water safe and
improving sanitation is essential to keeping kids healthy.

4. Exposure to Hazardous Chemicals

In some areas, kids are exposed to dangerous chemicals because of small-scale


gold mining, where mercury is often used. This toxic substance can seriously
harm their health, especially their brain and nerves. Even though there are
rules against it, people still use mercury, putting children in mining
communities at constant risk.

5. Plastic Pollution

The Philippines produces a lot of plastic waste, and much of it ends up in the
ocean and rivers. Kids in coastal and city areas often see trash everywhere,
which can hurt them and attract pests that spread diseases. Over time, plastic
breaks down into tiny pieces called microplastics, which can harm both nature
and people's health.
