What Are Rational Numbers?
A rational number is any number that can be written as p/q where p and q are integers and q ≠ 0.
Examples: 5/6, -9/2, 0 (=0/1), 7 (=7/1), 0.25 (=1/4).
Non-examples: √2, π (they cannot be written exactly as p/q).
Standard Form and Equivalent Fractions
Write p/q in simplest form by dividing numerator and denominator by their HCF.
The sign is kept in the numerator: -18/24 = -3/4.
Equivalent rationals: multiply or divide numerator and denominator by the same non-zero integer.
Rationals on the Number Line
To locate a/b on the number line, divide the segment from 0 to 1 into b equal parts and take a parts (left
side if negative).
Worked Example 1
Question: Convert 0.375 into a rational number in simplest form.
Solution: 0.375 = 375/1000. Divide by 125: 375/1000 = 3/8. So 0.375 = 3/8.
Worked Example 2
Question: Write three rational numbers between 1/2 and 2/3.
Solution: Use a common denominator: 1/2 = 6/12 and 2/3 = 8/12. Numbers between are 7/12. For
three numbers, use 1/2 = 12/24 and 2/3 = 16/24. Between them: 13/24, 14/24 (=7/12), 15/24 (=5/8).
Decimal Form
A rational number has a terminating decimal (ends) or a repeating decimal (like 0.333...).
Terminating happens when the denominator in simplest form has only factors 2 and/or 5.

Practice (Page 2)
Try these without a calculator. Show steps in your notebook.
1. Write -7 as p/q. 7. Convert 2 1/4 to an improper fraction
2. Simplify: 36/48 8. Is 7/12 a terminating decimal? (Yes/No)
3. Simplify: -18/24 9. Arrange in increasing order: -2/3, -0.7, -5/8
4. Which is rational: 0.12, √5, 3.1415 ? 10. Write 0.333... as a fraction
5. Find 2 rationals between 3/5 and 4/5 11. Find a rational number between -1 and 0
6. Convert 0.04 to simplest fraction 12. If a/b = 4/7, write an equivalent fraction with
denominator 21
Answer Key
1) -7/1 2) 3/4 3) -3/4 4) 0.12 and 3.1415 are rational; √5 is not 5) e.g., 13/20 and 7/10 6) 1/25 7) 9/4 8) No (12
has factor 3) 9) -0.7 < -2/3 < -5/8 10) 1/3 11) e.g., -1/2 12) 12/21
