Topic 1: Importance of Chemistry

Importance of Chemistry in the Study of Engineering

Engineering involves technical designs. Chemistry provides knowledge to engineers

in order for their projects to possess the right materials. To name a few of these
projects, for example, civil engineers design structures. It is important that a
particular structure needs to have a strength to carry stress. The choice of materials
can be learned in our study of alloys, polymers, ceramics and other engineering
materials. The soil at which the structure will be built is vital, and soil analysis can
be learned in chemistry. Electrical and electronics engineers design circuits. It is
helpful for you to know which are conductors, insulators and semi-conductors. We
will study the metallic properties of elements and how these elements are combined
to achieve the type of conductivity that you will need for your design. Mechanical
engineers design machines, and these machines need fluids to run them efficiently.
In our study of intermolecular forces, you would know why different fluids behave
differently at various conditions. We will also tackle the oxidation process and why
oxidation is undesirable to machines. In that way, you would want to protect your
machines from corrosion. Computer engineers, as designers of hardware of a
computer, including the cellphone that you always have in your hand, will
appreciate the topic on nanotechnology. Industrial engineers design processes,
systems and equipment to optimize productivity. Choosing the materials for
ergonomic equipment can be understood well in our study of chemistry. Those are
just some topics that are important in your study of engineering, and there are a lot
more.
