Title: SOHO NETWORK SETUP

Student Name: IBRAHIM ABDULSOBUR

Class/Batch: 2025

Date Submitted: 17/12/2025

Project Description:

This project focuses on the design, implementation, and troubleshooting of a Small

Office Home Office (SOHO) network. The objective is to simulate a real-world networking
environment by setting up both wired and wireless networks, configuring IP addressing, and
ensuring reliable connectivity for multiple devices. The project involves hands-on tasks such as
Ethernet cable termination, router and switch configuration, and network testing using standard
command-line tools.

Supervisor Name: MR. Prosper Eromonsele

Network Requirements

The network device needed for SOHO network setup are as follows:

• Minimum 5 devices (laptops/desktops)

• 1 Network Switch (8-port recommended)

• 1 Wireless Router (with DHCP capability)

• 1 Access Point (or router AP mode)

• Ethernet Cables (Cat6)

• Crimping tools (RJ45 connectors, crimper, cable tester)

Firstly, before we start the configuration we would start with terminating the cable, during the
cable termination we need an ethernet cable either Cat6, RJ45 connector, crimper and cable
tester.

fig 1
Fig 1 is showing the network devices that we listed above.

Terminating a CAT6 ethernet UTP cable (straight through)

Strip outer cable jacket carefully.

Separate them from each other

Arrange them by wires using T568B standard:

• White-Orange

• Orange

• White-Green

• Blue

• White-Blue

• Green

• White-Brown

• Brown

After arranging them carefully place it in the RJ45 connector

Then crimp the RJ45 connector with the crimper

After crimping check if the connection is correct by using a cable tester

Note: we would be giving this same process to the other end of the cable because we are
terminating a straight through cable.
Setting up a wired LAN

2. Connect the routers LAN port to the switch using an Ethernet cable.

[Link] 5 PCs/laptops to the switch using Ethernet cables.

-Access point

-Switch

-PCs

Configuring a wireless LAN (WLAN) with a router + access point

[Link] the router/AP management interface ([Link])

[Link]:

• SSID (Network Name)

• Security: WPA2/WPA3-Personal

• Strong Wi-Fi password

[Link] WPS (Wi-Fi protected setup): allows device to connect automatically with a secured
Wi-Fi network without manually typing password

[Link] at least one device wirelessly and verify connectivity

Ip address configuration

We would be assigning Ip address manually on pc’s and we would also be assigning it on the
DHCP server (making the router a DHCP server)

Manual (Static) IP Assignment

On one PC, configure:

• IP Address: [Link]

• Subnet Mask: [Link]

• Default Gateway: [Link]

• DNS Server: [Link]

Same process on another PC using a different IP (e.g192.168.1.11)

DHCP Configuration

1. Enable DHCP Server on the router

2. Set DHCP range (example):

• [Link] – [Link]

3. Set lease time

4. Configure remaining PCs to Obtain IP automatically

Network Testing, Verification and troubleshooting

Commands for testing and verification

• ipconfig – Verify IP address, gateway, and DHCP status

• ping [Link] – Test router connectivity

• ping [Link] – Test internet connectivity

• traceroute [Link] – Trace route to external network

Verify:

• All devices receive valid IP addresses

• Wired and wireless devices can communicate

Troubleshooting Scenario

Scenario: “No Internet on One PC”

Symptoms:

• PC powers on
• Network icon shows connected

• Cannot access internet

Troubleshooting Steps:

1. Check physical connection (cable and switch port).

2. Run ipconfig:

Verify IP address is in correct range.

3. Ping tests:

ping [Link] (TCP/IP stack)

ping [Link] (router)

ping [Link] (internet)

4. If IP is 169.254.x.x:

DHCP failure → Renew IP (ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew).

5. Verify DNS settings.

6. Test with a known-good cable.

Resolution Example:

Faulty Ethernet cable replaced → Internet restored.

The project has been completed, meeting all objectives. Key achievement and lesson learned in
Networking/CCNA from Mr. prosper of Global-tech are documented.

Thank you so much.
