V Case study base questions 3X4=12
36 Rinku was very happy to receive a fancy jumbo pencil from his best friend
Rohan on his birthday. Pencil is a basic writing tool, when sharpened its
shape is a combination of cylinder & cone as given in the picture.
Cylindrical pencil with conical head is a common shape worldwide since
ages. Commonly pencils are made up of wood & plastic but we should
promote pencils made up of eco-friendly material (many options available
in the market these days) to save environment.
The dimensions of Rinku’s pencil are given as follows:
Length of cylindrical portion is 21cm. Diameter of the base
is 1 cm and height of the conical portion is 1.2 cm
Based on the above information, answer the following questions:
(i) Find the slant height of the sharpened part. 1
(ii) Find curved surface area of sharpened part (in terms of 𝜋). 1
(iii) Find the total surface area of the pencil (in terms of 𝜋). 2
TOWER OF PISA : To prove that objects of different weights fall at the
37 same rate, Galileo dropped two objects with different
weights from the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy.
The objects hit the ground at the same time.
When an object is dropped from a tall building,
it falls about 16 feet in the first second,
48 feet in the second, and 80 feet in the third second,
regardless of its weight.
Based on the above information, answer the following questions:
(i) How many feet would an object fall in the sixth second? 1
(ii) How many feet would an object fall in the six second? 2
(iii) How many feet would an object fall in the eighth second? 1
38 A school plans to install a new flagpole in the playground. To determine
the ideal height, the mathematics teacher conducts a small activity with
the students.
A student stands 30 m away from an existing pole and measures the angle
of elevation to the top of the pole as 30°. The student then walks 10 m
closer to the pole, and the angle of elevation increases to 45°.
(i) Draw a labelled figure representing the situation described above. 1
(ii) Express the height of the pole for the two observations using 1
trigonometric equations.
(iii) Solve the two equations to find the height of the pole. 2
