School Disaster Preparedness Study

ABSTRACT

When a calamity strikes, one of the most susceptible populations is students


since they suffer from mental and physical ailments. It is acknowledged that
reducing risk is essential to creating a more equal and to lessen the severity
of losses sustained after catastrophes. When different facets of society work
together, risk is reduced and a program for emergency preparedness is
already in place. The primary thrust of this study was to determine the level
of implementation of the school risk reduction and disaster preparedness
program among the public elementary schools in the Schools Division Office
of Caloocan City, Caloocan North District I. A total of 216 public elementary
teachers were selected as research respondents representing the 9 schools
in Caloocan North I of Division Office of Caloocan City. It sought to determine
implementation in the aspects of disaster preparedness, prevention and
mitigation, and readiness in terms of human resources, facilities, education,
innovation, plans, policies, and procedures in education. The study used the
adopted survey questionnaires from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and
Management (NDRRM) Plan and the Department of Education (DepEd).

The findings revealed that the DRRM program in public elementary


schools in Caloocan North I of Caloocan City is well implemented and had a
good compliance level on disaster preparedness. Public elementary schools
are also very capable to respond to hazards in the occurrence of disasters. It
concluded that there is a significant relationship between the status of DRRM
implementation and the readiness among the public elementary school
teachers when grouped according to the school profile. A proposed program
for DRRM program enhancement was crafted to address the gaps of the
study.
