CHAPTER ONE

1.0 INTRODUCTION

A petrol filling station, also known as a gas station or fuel station, is a facility that
sells fuel and engine lubricants for motor vehicles. It's a local fuel depot and retailer
that receives fuel products from refineries, stores them in underground tanks, and
distributes them to motorists at varying prices

Importance of Petrol Filling Stations

Petrol filling stations play a crucial role in Nigeria's economy, providing essential
services to motorists and businesses. With over 27,000 registered stations in the
country, the industry is highly lucrative and contributes significantly to the nation's
GDP

Types of Petrol Filling Stations

➢ Compliance with regulations is crucial for ensuring safety and environmental
sustainability (DPR, 2020).

2.1 HISTORY OF PETROL FILLING STATIONS

The history of petrol filling stations dates back to the early 20th century, when the
first gasoline pumps were installed at pharmacies and general stores in the United
States.

Early Years (1900s-1920s)

- The first gasoline pump was installed in 1901 by Sylvanus Bowser, an American
inventor, in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

- Early petrol filling stations were simple, with a single pump and a storage tank.

- As car ownership increased, petrol filling stations began to spring up along

roadsides, often with a single attendant to serve customers.

Golden Age (1920s-1940s)

- The 1920s saw a significant increase in car ownership, leading to a growth in petrol
filling stations.

- Stations became more elaborate, with multiple pumps, canopies, and attendants.

- Major oil companies, such as Standard Oil and Shell, began to establish their own
branded petrol filling stations.

Post-War Era (1940s-1970s)

- Following World War II, petrol filling stations became a staple of modern life, with
many featuring amenities like restrooms, convenience stores, and repair services.

- The 1950s and 1960s saw the introduction of self-service petrol filling stations,
where customers pumped their own fuel

Modern Era (1980s-Present)

- The 1980s saw significant changes in petrol filling station design, with a focus on
safety, efficiency, and customer convenience.

- Modern petrol filling stations feature advanced fuel management systems,

6
automated payment systems, and environmentally friendly designs.

- The rise of digital technologies has transformed the petrol filling station experience,
with many stations offering mobile payments, loyalty programs, and other digital
services.

Nigeria's Petrol Filling Station History

- The first petrol filling station in Nigeria was established in 1907 by the Nigerian
National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

CHAPTER FIVE

5.0 DESIGN CONCEPT

The design concept is centered around sustainability, energy efficiency, and customer
convenience. The station will feature:

1. Solar Power: A 50 kW solar panel array will generate electricity and reduce
reliance on grid power.

2. Energy-Efficient Lighting: LED lighting and motion sensors will minimize energy
consumption.

3. Rainwater Harvesting: A 10,000-liter rainwater tank will collect and store

rainwater for non-potable uses.

4. Green Roofs: A green roof will reduce urban heat island effects and improve air
quality.

5. Sustainable Materials: The station will be constructed using sustainable materials,

such as recycled materials, low-VOC paints, and FSC-certified wood.

Layout and Circulation

The station will have a simple, intuitive layout with separate areas for fueling,
parking, and pedestrian traffic. The fueling area will feature:

1. Fuel Dispensers: Four fuel dispensers with automatic shut-off and spill prevention
systems.

2. Convenience Store: A 50-square-meter convenience store with a kiosk, restrooms,

and amenities.

3. Parking: 10 parking spaces, including two accessible spaces.

5.1 DESIGN CONCEPTS AND LAYOUTS

The design concept is centered around creating a modern, efficient, and sustainable
petrol filling station that provides a safe and convenient experience for customers.
The station will feature a simple, intuitive layout with separate areas for fueling,
parking, and pedestrian traffic

LAYOUT

The layout of the petrol filling station will include:

1. Fueling Area: A forecourt with four fuel dispensers, each with automatic shut-off
24
and spill prevention systems.

2. Convenience Store: A 50-square-meter convenience store with a kiosk, restrooms,

and amenities.

3. Parking: 10 parking spaces, including two accessible spaces.

4. Pedestrian Walkway: A designated pedestrian walkway that separates pedestrians

from the fueling area.

5. Landscaping: A landscaped area with plants and trees that will provide shade and
improve air quality.

Key Features

1. Solar Panels: A 50 kW solar panel array will generate electricity and reduce
reliance on grid power.

2. Rainwater Harvesting: A 10,000-liter rainwater tank will collect and store

rainwater for non-potable uses.

3. Energy-Efficient Lighting: LED lighting and motion sensors will minimize energy
consumption.

4. Green Roof: A green roof will reduce urban heat island effects and improve air
quality.

Dimensions

The petrol filling station will be approximately 0.5 hectares in size, with the
following dimensions:

- Length: 100 meters

- Width: 50 meters

- Height: 5 meters (to the top of the canopy)

Circulation

The circulation pattern will be designed to ensure safe and efficient movement of
vehicles and pedestrians. The fueling area will be designed to accommodate vehicles
of all sizes, with clear signage and markings to guide customers.

Safety and Security

The station will feature:

1. CCTV Cameras: Eight CCTV cameras will monitor the site and provide real-time
footage.
25
2. Alarm Systems: A comprehensive alarm system will alert authorities in case of
security breaches.

3. Fire Suppression System: A fire suppression system will quickly extinguish fires
and minimize
