STRATEGY IS NOT ABOUT

POWERPOINT
STRATEGY IS NOT ABOUT
CLEVER WORDS
Too many confuse
& overcomplicate
strategy
Here are three
simple steps that
really work...
1. The story
2. The purpose
3. The action
Part one:
The Story
Many think strategy
is about being
the smartest person
in the room.
It isn’t.

Strategy is about
being the most
persuasive person
in the room.
Think less...
Like a scientist
trying to discover
some radical new
insight.

Think more...
Like a lawyer trying
to win an argument
in the court room.
To win steal these
four strategic steps I
use...

Step #1: Present

Where our company is right now
Step #2: Challenge
The big challenge we face
Step #3: Opportunity
The unique opportunity we have
identified that we can leverage.
Step #4: Remedy
What we are going to do based on this
insight, to unlock new levels of growth.
Think of it as a simple
(and dramatic) story which takes
the listener on a journey...

Remedy

Present Opporunity

Challenge
You’ll find writing a
strategy, in this
story format, really
helps...

It forces you to cut

out the BS & makes
the argument
watertight.
Part one:
The Purpose
At the end of the
strategy story,
comes the purpose
statement.

A simple one-
sentence summary
that encapsulates
why your business
exists.
Don’t make this
purpose too long.
Don’t make this
purpose too clever.

Just make it simple,

clear & inspiring.
Here are three simple
& brilliant examples to
inspire you...

“We exist to inspire every

body to be an athlete”

“We exist to murder

thirst & plastic bottles”

“We exist to champion

beauty without artifice”
Part three:
The Action
Strategy is nothing
but words on a page
unless it inspires
action.
That is why this third
& final phase is
one of the most
important.
Here you should list
out all the actions
that need to take
place as a result of
your purpose
statement.
Here are two
examples...
“We exist to inspire every
body to be athlete”

Product: Distribution:
Accessible sports equipment Stores that inspire
that helps every body move every body to move

Innovation: Comms:
Tools that inspire every Comms that inspire
body to move every body to move

“We exist to murder thirst
& plastic bottles”
Product: Distribution:
Canned water that takes on Reduce plastic waste & quench
the plastic bottled water industry people's thirst at festivals

Innovation: Comms:
New innovations that satisfy Comms that challenge the BS in
thirst without the need for plastic the plastic bottle water category
