CO5: APPLY the concept of principle stresses and theories of failure to determine combined stress developed due to
normal and shear stress simultaneously applied on a 2-D member.
1 A rectangular bar of cross sectional area 10000 mm2 is subjected to an axial load of 20 kN.
Determine the normal and shear stress on a section which is inclined at an angle of 30 0
counterclockwise with normal cross section of the bar. (Analytical Method/ Mohr’s Circle)
2 For the given state of stress, determine the normal and shearing stresses exerted on the oblique

3. For the given state of stress, determine the normal and shearing stresses after the element shown
has been rotated through 250 clockwise. Show the stresses on rotated element. (Analytical

4 For the given state of stress, determine the normal and shearing stresses after the element shown
has been rotated through 100 counterclockwise. Show the stresses on rotated element.

5 Two steel plates of uniform cross section 10 × 80 mm are welded together as shown. Knowing
that centric 100-kN forces are applied to the welded plates and that β = 250. Determine (a) the
in-plane shearing stress parallel to the weld, (b) the normal stress perpendicular to the weld.

6 The stresses acting on element A in the web of a train rail is found to be 42 MPa tension in the
horizontal direction and 140 MPa compression in the vertical direction (see figure). Also, shear
stresses of magnitude 60 MPa act in the directions shown. Determine the stresses acting on an
element oriented at a counterclockwise angle of 48° from the horizontal.

7 The normal stresses at point in an elastic material are 100 MPa in X-direction and 60 MPa in Y-
direction with shear stresses of 50 MPa (clockwise on X-plane). Determine (a) Principal stresses
and position of the principal planes (b) maximum shear stress, its plane and associated normal
stresses, if both normal stresses are tensile. (Analytical Method/ Mohr’s Circle)
8 The principal stresses at point in a bar material are 50 MPa tensile and 30 MPa compressive.
Calculate, The normal, shear, resultant stress on a plane inclined at 500 to major principal plane.
Also find angle of obliquity.

9 For the state of plane stress shown in Fig, determine (a) Principal stresses, (b) Principal planes,
(c) Shear stress and normal stress on Maximum shear plane and orientation

10 A propeller shaft subjected to combined torsion and axial thrust is designed to resist a shear
stress of 63 MPa and a compressive stress of 90 MPa (see figure).
(a) Determine the principal stresses and orientation of principal planes
(b) Determine the maximum shear stresses and associated normal stresses

11 A rectangular bar is subjected to a tensile stress of 80MPa & shear stress of 30MPa. Determine
the principal stresses & the principal planes. Find also what stress acting alone can produce the
same maximum strain. Take Poisson’s ratio 0.3.
12 At a point within a body subjected to two mutually perpendicular directions, the stresses are 80
N/mm2 tensile on X-plane & 40N/mm2 tensile on Y-plane, each of the above stresses is
accompanied by a shear stress of 60 N/mm2 (counterclockwise on X-plane). Determine the
normal stress, shear stress & resultant stress on oblique plane inclined at an angle of 450 with the

13 A bolt is subjected to an axial pull of 8 kN & a transverse shear force of 3 kN. Determine the
diameter of the bolt required based on
1) Maximum distortion energy theory
2) Maximum shear stress theory
3) Maximum principal stress theory
Take elastic limit in simple tension = 270 MPa, Poisson’s ratio = 0.3 and Factor of safety = 3.
14 A member, solid circular in cross section is subjected to an axial pull of 13 kN & a transverse
shear force of 5 kN. Design the cross section of member based on
1) Maximum principal strain theory
2) Maximum strain energy theory
Take elastic limit in simple tension = 250 MPa, Poisson’s ratio = 0.3 and Factor of safety = 2.5.
15 A solid shaft is subjected to bending moment of 40 kNm and torque 10 kNm. Find the diameter
of the shaft according to
1) Maximum principal stress theory
2) Maximum shear stress theory
3) Maximum principal strain theory
Take stress at elastic limit = 200 MPa, Poisson’s ratio = 0.25 and Factor of safety = 2.
16 A solid shaft is subjected to bending moment of 14 kNm and twisting moment 10 kNm. Find the
diameter of the shaft according to
1) Maximum distortion energy theory
2) Maximum strain energy theory
Take stress at elastic limit = 200 MPa, Poisson’s ratio = 0.25 and Factor of safety = 2.
17 A circular bar of 20 mm diameter is subjected to an axial pull of 20 kN & a transverse shear
force of 15 kN. Determine the Factor of safety based on
1) Maximum principal strain theory
2) Maximum distortion energy theory
Take elastic limit in simple tension = 230 MPa, Poisson’s ratio = 0.3.
