1)Clearly identify five types of listening skills that a first
year student can apply in their academic life.
a)Taking notes
This is jotting down the key ideas and concepts for
further referencing.
It is a sign of attentiveness
Translating information through writing in your own
cognitive,structures and schema allows one to better
understand and interprete something being taught.
b)Listening attentively
A student should be attentive and show interest while
the student is being taught.
This helps the student grasp information well.
c)Listening and thinking critically.
A student should annalyse the speaker’s situation and
message to make a critical judgement about the
message.
Critical listening involves evaluating the credibility of the
message.
Determining supporting information helps one
understand better.
d)Overlooking personal characteristics of the speaker.
Not pre judging the speaker based on distracting physical
characterisics such as appearance and accent.
One should overlook the personal characteristics and
focus on the information from them.
e)Preparing physically and mentally.
One should prepare themselves physically by eliminating
all distactions or moving to a silent place.
One can prepare mentally for a lesson by getting a view
of the topic before being taught this helps in
understanding information better.
2)Ways of overcoming burriers to listening in class

BURRIERS INCLUDE:
a)Being distracted by noise.
Noise can be
Internal:noise streaming from physical illness,injury or
body stress.
External:noise streaming from radios,televisions or cell
phones.
b)Having preconceived thoughts and opinions.

c)Cognitive and personal barriers.


Lack of listening preparations and disorganized message.
Cognitive barriers include difference in speech and
through rate.

d)Not being interested in what is being said.

e)Interrupting the speaker.


Interrupting a conversation with improper body language
or inappropriate words.

f)Talking instead of listening.

SOLUTIONS
a)External noise can be overcome by lowering the
volume of distractive devices.

Internal noise can be overcome by seeing a doctor or


taking painkillers to relieve the pain.
b)To overcome preconceived thoughts one should focus
on the main message and make sure it doesn’t interfere
with the message receiving.

c)Prepare yourself to listen on the subject and


concentrating on the subject so that your attention may
not be drifted away.

d)Listen with a positive attitude on what is being said.


Have an open mind even if information contradicts your
view.

e)Stay focused and avoid distractions to enhance


concentration hence understanding.

f)Interrupt using polite language when necessary.


Use appropriate body language when interrupting.
g)Resist talking instead of listening this makes it
impossible for sender and receiver of information.
