1. Q1.

How much of 30% alcohol and 60% alcohol should be mixed to prepare 45% alcohol?

Solution:

 Higher strength = 60%

 Lower strength = 30%
 Desired strength = 45%

Cross subtraction:

60% | 15 (45 – 30)

|
45% |
|
30% | 15 (60 – 45)

Ratio = 15 : 15 = 1 : 1

👉 Mix equal parts (1:1).

So, if 100 mL is needed → 50 mL of 30% + 50 mL of 60%.

2. Q2.

In what proportion should 20% sugar solution and 50% sugar solution be mixed to get 35%
solution?

Solution:

 Higher = 50%
 Lower = 20%
 Desired = 35%

Cross subtraction:

50% | 15 (35 – 20)

|
35% |
|
20% | 15 (50 – 35)

Ratio = 15 : 15 = 1 : 1

👉 Mix equal parts of 20% and 50%.

3. Q3.

How many mL of 80% alcohol must be mixed with 40% alcohol to make 400 mL of 60%
alcohol?

Solution:

 Higher = 80%
 Lower = 40%
 Desired = 60%

Cross subtraction:

80% | 20 (60 – 40)

|
60% |
|
40% | 20 (80 – 60)

Ratio = 20 : 20 = 1 : 1

👉 Equal parts.
So, 400 mL ÷ 2 = 200 mL each.

Answer: 200 mL of 80% + 200 mL of 40% = 400 mL of 60%.

4. Q4.

How many grams of 10% ointment and 30% ointment should be mixed to prepare 200 g of 25%
ointment?

Solution:

 Higher = 30%
 Lower = 10%
 Desired = 25%

Cross subtraction:

30% | 15 (25 – 10)

|
25% |
|
10% | 5 (30 – 25)
Ratio = 15 : 5 = 3 : 1

👉 Mix in 3:1 ratio.

Total parts = 3 + 1 = 4
Each part = 200 ÷ 4 = 50 g

 3 parts = 150 g (30% ointment)

 1 part = 50 g (10% ointment)

Answer: 150 g of 30% + 50 g of 10% = 200 g of 25% ointment.
