Reason (R) Carbon has four electrons in its outermost shell and has the tendency to share electrons with
carbon or other elements.

3 Assertion (A) The functional group present in alcohols is —OH.

Reason (r) It is the same group as present in water, hence, water and alcohol have similar properties.

from this statement?
(iii) State the role of alkaline KMnO4 in the reaction involving conversion of an alcohol to corresponding
carboxylic acid.

4 A carbon compound 'A' having melting point 156 K and boiling point 351K, with molecular formula C2H6O is
soluble in water in all proportlons.
(i) ldentity 'A' and draw its electron dot structure.

Q.6 Case based question. (Chm) 20

1 More than three million carbon compounds have been discovered in the field of chemistry. The diversity of
these compounds is due to the capacity of carbon atoms for bonding with one another as well as with other
atoms. Most of the carbon compounds are poor conductors of electricity and have low melting and boiling
points.
(a) Write the molecular formula of first two members of homologous series having functional group —
Br.
(b) Given below are the formulae of some functional groups.

Write the name of the following groups.

(c) What would be observed on adding a 5% alkaline potassium permanganate drop by to some warm
ethanol taken in a test tube? State the role of KMnO4 in the reaction and write the chemical equation for
the reaction involved.

2 Carbon, in all its allotropic forms burns in oxygen to give carbon dioxide along with the release of heat and light.
Most carbon compounds also release a large amount of heat and light on burning. Saturated hydrocarbons will
generally give a clean flame while unsaturated carbon compounds will give a yellow flame with lots of black
smoke.
(i) What is the reason for incomplete combustion.
(ii) Combustion is an oxidation or reduction type of reaction.
(iii) Complete the following reactions.

(b) CH3CH2OH + O2 → ......+......

3 Most dirt is oily in nature and as you know, oil does not dissolve in water. The molecules of soap are sodium or
potassium salts of long chain carboxylic acids. The ionic end of soap interacts with water while the carbon chain
interacts with oil. The soap molecules, thus form structures called micelles, where on end of the molecules is
towards the oil droplet while the ionic end faces outside. This forms an emulsion in water.
(i) To remove hardness of water, the water is treated with soap or detergent.
(ii) Draw the structure of soap molecule showing hydrophilic and hydrophobic part.
(iii) Peopple use a variety of methods to wash clothes. Why is agitation necessary to get clean clothes.
