Cyclone Separator Design for Air Pollution

The document outlines an end-semester examination for a Master's program in Industrial Chemistry, focusing on air pollution control. It includes two main questions: designing a cyclone separator for dust removal and describing types of industrial filters, specifically a pulse jet type bag-house filter for cement dust collection. The examination requires calculations based on provided data and particle size distribution to determine cyclone dimensions and filter requirements.

END-SEMESTER EXAMINATION –

(60 minutes)
Answer both questions

1.
A cyclone separator is to be designed to remove dust from a process air stream having a flow rate
of 0.7 m3/s. Density of air entering the cyclone is 1.0 kg/m3, while the dust particles have a density
of 1200 kg/m3. respectively. Particle size distribution of dust is given in Table Q1. Inlet velocity
of air at the cyclone separator is to be maintained at 16 m/s. Cyclone inlet width (Bc) and height
(Hc) in terms of cyclone diameter, Dc, are 0.25Dc and 0.5Dc, respectively. Viscosity () of air
entering the cyclone is 1.8x10-5 Pa.s.

[40%]
(b) A pulse jet type bag-house filter is to be employed to collect cement dust emitted from a cement
manufacturing facility. The air flow rate at the filter inlet is 0.5 m3/s. Gas to cloth ratio for a pulse
jet filter is 0.005 m3.s-1 per m2 net cloth area. If the dimensions of the available filter tubes are 0.1
m in diameter and 3 m in length, calculate the number of tubes required. Use the data given in
Table Q2 to obtain gross cloth area of the filter bags. [60%]
