Vitrectomy
For seven days I lived
inside a cage
Designed by doctors to save
my eye,
Staring at the ground, my
head down,
Awake and asleep.
And now I have emerged,
Only to find another cage
beyond it.
Larger to be sure,
But just as surely blocking
sight.
I had not noticed it before.
But accustomed now to
cages
I can see the other, older
one.
This cage was built by me.
What was I trying to save?
I can’t remember. And
escape from this one
Will not be as easy as
looking up.
If I break free I suppose
There will be another cage
beyond it,
And others beyond that.
All of my design, the
blueprints lost.
We make our way from
cage to cage,
Forged by our own hands.
Each a refuge and a prison,
Impenetrable until we find
it.
I have emerged from a cage
Designed by doctors to save
my eye.
And now I see.
