Goal Development Example

Please see the below example of how to complete the S.M.A.R.T. Goals section of your
worksheet. The individual elements are color coded for illustrative purposes.

Original Goal Statement #1: I will keep my study space more organized.

Answer the questions below.

SPECIFIC: What specific outcome would you like to achieve?


 My study space will stay organized.
 Everything will have a place.

MEASURABLE: How will you measure and evaluate your progress?
 I will complete tasks quicker.
 I will be able to find things easily.

ACTION-ORIENTED: What will you do to achieve your goal?


 I will use a desk organizer.
 I will keep my notebooks and class materials up to date and in order.

REALISTIC: Why is this goal important to you now?


 It is important for me to be efficient with my time.
 I care about the environment I work in.

TIMELY: When will you complete this goal? What is the time-frame/deadline for
completing this goal?
 I will organize my workspace at the beginning of the semester.
 I will organize my workspace weekly.
 I will end the semester with a well organized work space.

Use the answers to the questions above as a guide to help shape your original goal statement
into a SMART goal statement. Remember, you want to try to incorporate each element of a
SMART goal as listed above on the infographic.

SMART Goal Statement #1: I will keep my study space organized by using organizational tools
and making sure my study materials are orderly at the end of each week, so that I save time and
end the semester feeling positive about my efficiency and study environment.
