games and lovers strolling... *

TIGHT ON CALLUM HARDING *

...fourteen years old and small for his age. He sits cross- *
legged on the cracked concrete, his back against a chainlink *
fence, bent over a notebook, writing furiously.

ANOTHER ANGLE *

...as behind Callum, a GROUP OF TEENS play a heated game of *

basketball. Callum oblivious to them. They, oblivious to *
Callum... *

DOWN THE BLOCK *

...a HOMELESS MAN rants on the corner. While on... *

THE STREET *

...cars honk as they rumble through the neighborhood. And *

despite the cacophony of SOUNDS and movement... *

CALLUM *

...remains fiercely focused on his notebook, writing in a *

possessed and frantic frenzy. And as the SOUNDS around him *
FADE AWAY, the VOICE IN HIS HEAD is heard... *

CALLUM (V.O.)
Broken wing
Feathers wet
But I’m gonna fly

...and as we HEAR him speak the words in his mind, they *

appear on screen...his handwriting moving ACROSS THE FRAME... *

CALLUM (V.O.)

...as a basketball HITS the CHAIN LINK FENCE above Callum’s *

head with a LOUD CLANG, but still, he writes...

of his phone pulling him out of the zone...and he pulls a *
prepaid flip phone out of his pocket... *

ON THE PHONE

...a text: *

“Meet at 11:00 tonight.” *

...and we watch, as Callum texts back... *

“I told you I’m done.” *

...and shoves the phone back in his pocket. He finds his *

rhythm again and the handwriting returns to the screen as...

CALLUM (V.O.)
Soaring rising flying trying
Always trying

...and Callum smiles. He likes that. And we... *

CUT TO:

2 INT. CALLUM’S APARTMENT - DAY 2

...as Callum pulls his keys from the locks and makes his way *
inside, dropping his backpack on the floor. It is clearly a *
small and cluttered apartment; badly in need of paint and *
repair... *

CALLUM
(calling) *
Hey, Dad! I’m home!

...and we watch as Callum goes straight to the fridge and *

opens the door. It’s pretty bare inside, but he unearths a
bag of bread with one slice remaining. He pulls it out,
squirts some mustard on top, and shoves it in his mouth in
two quick bites.

...as Callum tosses the bag into the kitchen trash and *
something catches his eye. He reaches in and grabs a *

...a corporate letterhead and beneath it, in capital red *

SECOND EVICTION NOTICE

ON CALLUM *

...as he just keeps staring at the letter. And at that EXACT *

MOMENT *

LEVI

...a man in his thirties, emerges from an unseen bedroom. *

Something about him suggests a man already defeated by life, *
but doing his best not to let his son see it... *

LEVI
(seeing Callum holding a *
letter in his hand) *
Whatcha got there? *

...and Callum looks up...holds out the letter. And his father *
takes it... *

LEVI
(giving it a quick glance) *
Oh. That. Don’t worry about that.

...and Levi crumples it up, and tosses it back in the trash. *

LEVI (CONT’D)
I’ll have a new job before any of *
that happens. *

CALLUM
(hopeful)
Oh yeah? How’d the interview go *
today? *

LEVI *
It was alright. *
(and then) *
Nice people. *
(and then) *
I just don’t think it’s gonna work *
out. *
(MORE)

You’re gonna get hurt even worse. *

LEVI *
(no big deal) *

(changing the subject)
You hungry? How about some mac ‘n
cheese?

CALLUM
There’s none left. We ate the last *
box last night.

LEVI
(opening a cabinet) *
Well, I’m sure we can scrounge up
something... *

...and as Levi busies himself looking for some dinner, *

Callum’s phone BUZZES again. He pulls it out of his pocket *
and SEES... *

ON THE PHONE

...another text... *

“You sure? It’s a lot of cash.” *

ON CALLUM *

...making a painful decision. And starting to text back... *

“OK. I’ll do one more.” *

...and we are TIGHT ON CALLUM as he pulls a SKI MASK over his *

ANOTHER ANGLE *

...to REVEAL it’s the dead of night. And we watch as Callum *

and an ACCOMPLICE, both dressed in black and both wearing ski *
masks, quietly round the corner, Callum with a backpack on *
his back... *

ON AN IMPRESSIVE HOUSE *

...surrounded by a gate. Resembling an old English manor *

house. And there, SITTING IN THE DRIVEWAY, is a shiny new *
RANGE ROVER... *

ANOTHER ANGLE *

...as Callum and his friend quietly open the gate and make *
their way towards the CAR...The Accomplice stopping and *
keeping a lookout as Callum continues quietly towards the *
car.

ON CALLUM *

...as he slips off his backpack and pulls a hammer and nail *
out of it. And we watch as he precisely places the nail at *
the edge of the heavily-tinted driver’s side window,
carefully aims the hammer, and... *

THE WINDOW *

...SHATTERS...revealing the CAR’S OWNER PASSED OUT in the *

driver’s seat, a half-empty whiskey bottle in his lap.

ON CALLUM *

...jumping back in surprise... *

CALLUM *
(to himself) *
Damn! *

ANOTHER ANGLE *

...as THE OWNER, a big dude, is roused from his drunken *

stupor.

Hey! What the hell’s going on?! *

...and he SEES Callum, with his ski mask and hammer, and *
INSTINCTIVELY SLAMS his car door open and knocks Callum to *
the ground. *

ON CALLUM *

...as he struggles to his feet, but the Owner, who is easily *

twice his size, stumbles from the car and lunges for him, the *
two of them tumbling to the ground. *

ON THE ACCOMPLICE *

...rushing in and trying desperately to pull the Owner off of *

Callum.

CALLUM *
(to the accomplice) *
Just go! Get out of here! Go! *

...but The Accomplice doesn’t give up...keeps trying to pull *

the owner off of Callum... *

CALLUM
C’mon! Just go! Now! *

ANOTHER ANGLE *

...and The Accomplice turns...and jumps in the RANGE ROVER. *

And we HEAR the ENGINE starting up with a desperate *
ROAR...and a second later the vehicle PEELS backwards out of *
the DRIVEWAY...even as... *

THE OWNER *

...who is sitting on top of Callum now, begins viciously *

punching him...Callum trying his damndest to fend the bigger *
man off with his hammer...but he’s too small and the big man *
quickly overpowers him, tosses the hammer away, and with one *
hand pins Callum’s hands down as he uses his other to reach *
into his pocket and pull out his cell and tap out 911... *

OWNER *
(into the cell; *
breathless) *
Hi. I’ve got an intruder on my *
property. Caught him trying to *
steal my new car. *
(and then) *
Nah. He ain’t going anyplace. I’m *
sitting on him... *

(sneaking up on it) *
Soooo...you’re good...I’m good. I *
like your mask...you like my mask. *
So...what’s the ask? *

ANNA *
Excuse me? *

CHUNK *
(I am so ahead of you) *
C’mon Anna. For five Sundays in a *
row you’ve been too busy to even *
chat on the phone...all of a sudden *
you offer to come to me? Buy me *
coffee? Buy me a scone?!!! *

...and she stops. Caught. Looks at him. *

ANNA *

CHUNK *

She nods playfully. *

ANNA *

Anna and Chunk slip inside, buckle their belts, and as the *
car takes off... *

haven’t met. *

What’d he do? Why’s he need a *
lawyer? *

ANNA *
He didn’t do anything. It’s for one *
of his students. *

CHUNK *
(all is well) *
Oh! He’s a teacher. *
(pleased) *
I like that... *

ANNA *
Actually...he’s a writer. A really *
talented, published writer. He’s *
had quite a few short stories *
published online. Wrote a book *
review for the Times. And he’s *
almost done with his first novel. *

CHUNK *
Okay. I’m impressed. *

CHUNK *
Never met a Brooks... *

ANNA *
Me neither. Anyway Brooks really *
cares about this kid. He’s only *
fourteen. And he doesn’t come from *
much. But he’s actually in a lot of *
trouble. And he needs a good *
lawyer. *
(and then) *
And I happen to know a great *
lawyer, so... *

CHUNK *
(finishing the sentence) *
So...okay. I get it. *
(and then) *
Thing is...I can’t just take a case *
‘cause I want to take a case. It’s *
not completely up to me. I work for *
someone. *

ANNA
(interrupting)
I know. I know.
(and then)
But surely an incredible lawyer

CHUNK

(shaking his head; knowing *

...as SEEN THROUGH THE HALLWAY GLASS. An anxious Chunk sits *

by himself at the end of the Conference Room table. Smooths *
his tie. Checks his watch. Checks his breath with his palm. *
And SUDDENLY there is a tapping on the glass. And Chunk *
startles and looks up to SEE... *

TAYLOR *

...standing on the HALLWAY SIDE of the window. She smiles at *

Chunk and mouths the words “They’re here!”. *

ANOTHER ANGLE *

...and at that EXACT MOMENT, there is A KNOCK on the *

Conference Room door... *

CHUNK *
(rising from his seat; *
calling) *
C’mon in... *

...and MARISSA ushers in Anna and her boyfriend... *

BROOKS *

...who is very much a man. Nothing boyish about him. *

Attractive and confident. He is wearing a suit and looks *
almost as good in it as Chunk looks in his... *

ON CHUNK *

...doing his best not to register his surprise at the man’s *

age. He is clearly at least thirty and carries himself with *
the confidence of a successful adult and immediately offers *
Chunk his elbow...and as the two men bump arms... *

CHUNK *
Very nice to meet you Brooks. *

BROOKS *
Pleasure to meet you Mr. Palmer. *
(and then) *
And thank you for agreeing to meet *
with me today. I mean...about this *
other matter. *
(and then) *
Believe me...this is not the way I *
had imagined meeting you would *
happen. *

...as the two of them step into the hallway and out of *
eyesight and earshot of Brooks... *

ANNA *
(a giddy whisper) *
So what do you think? *

CHUNK *
(a whisper back) *
How old is that man? *

ANNA *
He’s...thirty. *

CHUNK *
And does he know you’re only twenty- *
one? *

ANNA *
Only twenty-one? *

CHUNK *
He’s a grown man. A man. Grown. *
(and then) *
He’s old enough to be... *

ANNA *
My boyfriend. I know. *

Chunk just stares at her. Knows she’s right. *

Off Chunk, how can he say no to that?

Chunk ushers Anna and her boyfriend, BROOKS (early 30s,

intellectual, self-possessed), into the conference room. Anna
looks a little nervous, but Brooks has an easy confidence
about him.

BROOKS
Thank you so much for agreeing to
see me today. I get that “needing
legal help” isn’t exactly the best
first impression to make on your
girlfriend’s father.

Chunk chuckles, good-natured.

CHUNK
I’ll try not to hold it against
you.

As everyone takes their seats, Chunk throws Brooks a softball

question to break the ice.

CHUNK
So, Anna tells me you’re a writer.

BROOKS
Yeah, but it took me a minute to
figure out what I wanted to do.
Right after college I did a stint
with AmeriCorps, then I worked at a
start up--

Chunk has just caught up to something and interrupts.

After college? When did you
graduate?

BROOKS
2013.

CHUNK
2013? So that makes you...

BROOKS
I’m thirty-one.

Chunk’s eyes dart to Anna -- she clearly didn’t tell him

about this stark age difference. Anna quickly jumps in to
pivot the conversation.

ANNA
We don’t want to waste your time,
Dad. So maybe we should talk about
Callum and his case.

Chunk knows exactly what Anna is doing, but goes with it.

CHUNK
Of course. So, Callum. Anna told me
he was arrested trying to steal a
car. Is he being held in a juvenile
facility?

BROOKS
No. They released him to his dad.
Thank God.
(and then, passionately)
I’m telling you, it’s not like
Callum to do something like this.
I’ve worked with him for about two
years. He’s a good kid, a bright
kid. And an incredibly talented
writer, especially for his age.

CHUNK
How old is he?

BROOKS
Fourteen.

CHUNK
That’s too bad. If he was under
thirteen, the worst he’d be looking
at is probation.

Seriously? That cutoff just feels
so arbitrary.

Brooks is desperate for Chunk to see how much Callum needs

his help.

BROOKS
The poor kid has never caught a
break in his life. His mom died
when he was little. His dad’s been
in and out of work. They’ve even
been homeless at times. I know
that’s no excuse for breaking the
law, but--

ANNA
(jumping in)
One stupid decision shouldn’t ruin
your whole future. Not when you’re
only fourteen.
(and then)
Can you help him, Dad?

CHUNK
I told you, I would love to.

Chunk turns to Brooks.

CHUNK
The thing is, it’s not entirely up
to me. Especially if we’re taking a
case pro bono.

BROOKS
(quickly)
Oh, I wasn’t expecting you to do
this pro bono. I can pay.

Chunk smiles graciously.

CHUNK
It’s very kind of you to offer to
do that, but...

How to say this without making Brooks feel small?

CHUNK (CONT'D)
I’m not sure how much Anna’s told
you about TAC. We’ve got a few more
bells and whistles than a
traditional law firm. And none of
that comes cheap.

Chunk’s eyes dart to Anna. A hundred thousand dollars is no

problem? Who is this guy?

Anna just smiles.

BROOKS
If it makes you feel more
comfortable, I’m happy to do a
retainer upfront. Just tell me how
much and I’ll write the check.

Off Chunk, not sure how he feels about this...

HARD CUT TO:

6 INT. COURTHOUSE CORRIDOR - DAY 6

BULL sits on a bench outside a courtroom. Chunk paces nearby,

his phone pressed to his ear. We can’t hear what he’s saying
but he looks tense. Finally, he hangs up and joins Bull.

BULL
What’s their ETA?

CHUNK
No idea. I got the dad’s voicemail
again. I left him another message,
but...

Chunk trails off, frustrated, then...

CHUNK
I’ve never gone into court without
even meeting my client first.

BULL
(checking his watch)
At this rate we may be going into
court without a client.
(and then; flippant)
Tell Anna her boyfriend still has

Courtroom thirty-two, this is it.

...springing from his seat as he spots them, praying this is

boss, Dr. Jason Bull.

Bull -- who is already on his feet -- gives the awkward wave

Levi is still flustered and embarrassed by his late arrival.

But here’s the thing, the Judge is
more likely to move the case if the
Prosecutor doesn’t object. We spoke
to the Prosecutor already and she’s
willing to agree to this, on one
condition.

CHUNK
Callum needs to tell her who he was
working with. He needs to name
everyone who was involved in this
crime.

ON CALLUM

...looking alarmed.

But Levi doesn’t notice this look on his son’s face.

LEVI
That’s easy, Callum will tell her
whatever she wants.

But Callum’s wheels are turning, desperately trying to come

Levi erupts with an anger born of intense fear.

Callum is clearly terrified by this prospect, but he stays

silent.

Chunk studies Callum, something dawning on him.

CHUNK
I understand if you’re scared. But
if someone’s threatened you, we can
keep you safe, keep your dad safe.
I promise.

LEVI
Did someone threaten you, Callum?
Is that it?

Callum shakes his head again, but it’s hard to know if he’s
telling the truth. He looks at his dad, trying to explain.

CALLUM
I knew stealing that car was wrong,
Dad, but I did it anyway. I did it.
I’m the one who messed up and got
caught. And I’m not going to bring
anyone else down with me.

element of intentional force to it.
The Prosecutor’s going to have to
show that Callum used a “dangerous
instrument”--

BULL
The hammer?

CHUNK
Yes. That he used the hammer to
“forcibly” steal the car. But I’m
going to argue that the hammer
wasn’t a weapon, it was just a tool
that Callum used to break the car’s
window. That he didn’t intend to
use it to force the owner into
giving him the car.

BULL
Hell, he didn’t even expect the
owner to be in the car.

CHUNK
Exactly. But when the owner
attacked him--

(picking up the thread)
Callum had to defend himself.

Right again. And if we can use self-
defense to knock out the First
Degree Robbery charge, all we’re
left with is the Grand Larceny
charge, which gives Callum a chance
at probation instead of jail time.

doorway. It’s Taylor, with Brooks in tow.

TAYLOR
Hey Chunk, I brought you a visitor.

Chunk is a little embarrassed to see Brooks after the rough

day they had in court.

CHUNK
Thanks, Taylor.

Taylor exits.

BROOKS
I hope it’s okay stopping by like
this, but I talked to Callum after
court.

Brooks looks concerned as he enters the conference room.

BROOKS
Was it as bad as it sounded?

CHUNK
(admitting grudgingly)
It wasn’t good. But I’m hoping it
might finally scare some sense into
Callum, get him to name names.

Chunk’s not sure how to broach what he’s about to ask for.

CHUNK
The guy who was just here...

TAYLOR
Anna’s boyfriend?

CHUNK
Yeah. I was wondering, if you
wouldn’t mind...looking into him.

Taylor swivels around in her chair to give Chunk her full

attention.

TAYLOR
Are you asking me to do a deep dive
on your daughter’s boyfriend?

Chunk looks slightly embarrassed.

TAYLOR
(quickly)
I mean, no judgment, but I’ve gotta
tell you from past experience that
these are dangerous waters. Let’s
say I do find something bad about
Brooks -- then what? Do you admit
to Anna that you asked me to snoop
on her guy?

a boy he only teaches one afternoon
a week.

TAYLOR
Some people are just generous,
Chunk.

CHUNK
Yeah, well, he just came in here
and basically offered to perjure
himself in court for the kid.

TAYLOR
Seriously?

CHUNK
This whole time, I’ve assumed
Callum was keeping his mouth shut
because he was scared of someone.
But what if he’s staying quiet out
of loyalty?

Taylor can’t quite believe what Chunk is suggesting.

TAYLOR
To Brooks? You think Brooks is
involved in these car thefts?

CHUNK
It would explain how a freelance
writer can afford our fees.

Chunk can see that Taylor still looks dubious, but he’s not
giving up.

CHUNK
Look, we still haven’t found the
leader of this car theft ring. And
Brooks is Callum’s mentor. Callum
clearly admires him, wants his
approval.

JOSH SCHUMAKER (the Ferrari Owner from the Teaser) is on the

stand. He’s still an imposing man, but he seems like an
entirely different person now that he’s sober and wearing a
nice business suit.

JOSH SCHUMAKER
I woke up to the sound of my window
shattering. Glass was raining down
on me. It took me a minute to
understand what was happening, but
then I saw the defendant standing
there, trying to steal my car.

ON ADA COX

...questioning him.

ADA COX
And did the defendant have a
weapon?

JOSH SCHUMAKER
Yes, he had a hammer. He threatened
me with it while ordering me out of
the car.

ADA COX
And did you get out?

JOSH SCHUMAKER
Yes, but I guess I didn’t move fast
enough, because he came after me
with that hammer anyway.

I’m not sure what that means, but

Yes. The defendant struck me

I don’t know exactly. Too many
obviously, or I wouldn’t have
passed out in my car.

CHUNK
But it’s fair to say that you were
extremely inebriated, isn’t that
correct?

JOSH SCHUMAKER
Yes.

CHUNK
And when a person is so inebriated
that they are rendered unconscious,
isn’t it also fair to say that
their memory might be a little
fuzzy?

JOSH SCHUMAKER
(defensive)
I might’ve started out drunk, but
waking up to your car window
shattering tends to sober a man up.

Chunk shoots the jury a look that says he highly doubts this.
Then he turns back to the witness, seemingly changing tacks.

CHUNK
Out of curiosity, how tall are you,
Mr. Schumaker?

Schumaker’s not sure where this is going, but he answers.

Callum looks nervous as he gets to his feet. Once again

swimming in a suit that’s much too big for him. Still wearing
that sling.

CHUNK
Now, Mr. Schumaker, if you had to
guess, how tall would you say
Callum Harding is?

Schumaker studies Callum a moment.

JOSH SCHUMAKER
I’d say...five foot four. Maybe
five five.

CHUNK
And how much would you guess he
weighs?

JOSH SCHUMAKER
Maybe a hundred twenty,
thereabouts.

CHUNK
So basically half of what you
weigh, isn’t that right?

JOSH SCHUMAKER
Yes. I guess so.

Chunk turns to address Callum.

someone was trying to steal your
Ferrari, I bet you were pretty
ticked off, huh?

JOSH SCHUMAKER
Well, I wasn’t happy about it.

CHUNK
So you were angry, you were drunk,
and you were twice the size of this
child...
(pointing to Callum)
Don’t you think he had reason to
feel threatened by you? To feel
like he needed to defend himself?

ON SCHUMAKER

...starting to get heated.

JOSH SCHUMAKER
I was just sitting there minding my
own business -- he’s the one who
came after me first. With a hammer.

CHUNK
Yes, you testified that Mr. Harding
“repeatedly struck you with a
hammer.” If that is so, let me ask
you this -- why don’t you have any
injuries? Any bruises even?
(gesturing to Callum)
My client wasn’t struck with a
hammer, merely your fists. And yet,
as you can clearly see, he’s
severely bruised and his shoulder
was dislocated.

Schumaker looks taken aback. He fumbles for an answer.

to Hawaii that day. But I woke up
that morning to a note telling me
she was leaving me. For my best

Rough day in court, I hear.

CHUNK
To put it mildly.

BENNY
You prepare for the curveball, then
they throw a screwball. It’s
happened to me many times.

Chunk nods, appreciating the consolation. He starts to exit,

but then turns back.

CHUNK
Hey, before you take off, what do
you think about me putting Callum
on the stand? To tell his side of
the story. Show the jury that he’s
just a kid. A very promising kid
who deserves a second chance.

BENNY
It’s a risky move. You know the ADA
is going to ask Callum who he was
working with and Callum is going to
refuse to answer. That could read
as dishonesty and the jury might
doubt his entire story.

CHUNK
(discouraged)
Right.

BENNY
You want me to stick around, help
you strategize?

CHUNK
Nah. I know you’re busy with the
campaign. I’ll figure it out. But

Chunk is still struggling to see the relevance.

CHUNK
It’s been a long day. You’re gonna
have to spell this out for me.

DANNY
Well, I checked, and it turns out
that several other people who had
their high-end cars stolen in the
area were out of town when their
cars were taken. So I’m thinking,
maybe the ringleader had some way
of targeting people who were going
to be out of town.

CHUNK
Huh, there could be something
there.

DANNY
So far I haven’t found a common
link between them -- like the same
security company or mailman -- but
I’ll keep digging.

CHUNK

(turning to Taylor)
How about you? Did you find
anything on Brooks?

TAYLOR
Well, it could be nothing. But, his
finances do look a little...wonky.

This is exactly what Chunk feared.

between Chunk and Anna. It looks like they were sharing a
good meal, but Anna’s no longer enjoying it. She stares Chunk

Chunk is unapologetic as he defends himself.

CHUNK
I had a professional duty--

ANNA
Behind my back?!

Chunk winces. He doesn’t feel good about going behind Anna’s

back, but he also feels justified.

CHUNK
A professional duty to look into
Brooks for the sake of my client.
(quickly)

DANNY
Happily. Besides, I sit next to you
every day. I’ve seen how much you
can figure out about people’s lives
from every single “like.” No
thanks.

TAYLOR
Well, luckily for us, Callum wasn’t
so paranoid. And now, thanks to Dr.
Bull’s little tip about Callum’s
odes to the girl with “waves of
fire,” I was finally able to make
some progress.

CHUNK
I take it Callum follows a girl
with red hair.

TAYLOR
Callum follows several dozen girls
with red hair. But only a few of
them live anywhere close to Callum.
I was able to narrow that down even
further from another clue I got
from Callum’s poetry. I think Ms.
Waves of Fire is a dancer.

Chunk clocks Vanessa’s nerves.

CHUNK
No. Callum’s never mentioned your
name. But we have reason to believe
that he cares about you. And we’re
just hoping that if you care about

MAN
You hassling my sister?
(to Vanessa)
Who are these people?

Vanessa, looking downright scared now, tries to cover.

VANESSA
They’re just collecting for some
charity. I told them to get lost.

The young man stares Chunk and Danny down aggressively.

MAN
Well, you heard the girl, get lost.

28 EXT. STREET - DAY 28

Danny pushes out the front door of the building onto the
street. She’s followed by Chunk.

CHUNK
Notice how jumpy Vanessa got when
we asked her about the stolen cars?

Callum shakes his head in denial, but Chunk keeps right on

talking.

CHUNK
Vanessa brought you into this car
theft ring, didn’t she? Introduced
you to the ringleader, her brother,
Victor?

A hint of anxiety fills Callum’s eyes at Victor’s name.

BULL
That’s right. We know about Victor.
Our investigators looked into him
and that dog kennel where he works.
We know that the Ferrari owner
boarded his dog at that kennel in
anticipation of his trip.

CHUNK
We also know that four other car
theft victims in the area also had
their dogs boarded at Victor’s
kennel at the time their cars were

ON CALLUM

CALLUM
You can’t make me rat out Vanessa.
I won’t.

BULL
I admire your loyalty, Callum.
Loyalty is a very noble thing. But
blind loyalty? That’s just foolish.

It’s not like this girl has been
loyal to you, has she?

CHUNK
First she ropes you into breaking
the law, then she leaves you high
and dry when you get busted?

ON CALLUM

CALLUM
You’re wrong about her. Vanessa
didn’t want to leave me there. When
that man started beating on me, she
tried to stop him. I told her to
go.

Vanessa didn’t even want me
stealing cars at all. She hated the
whole thing. But her brother made
her do it. He’s a scary dude.

CHUNK
We can make sure you’re protected
from him, Callum. If you testify
against Victor, we can get you a
deal, get your charges reduced,
maybe even dismissed.

I’m not stupid. I know if I testify
against Victor, Vanessa could wind
up in prison, too. I won’t let that
happen.

CHUNK
What do you think’s going to happen
to Vanessa if you fall on your
sword for her and go to jail? If
she keeps stealing cars, eventually
she’s going to get caught and wind
up in jail, too.

BULL
Or worse. She could get herself
killed in a high-speed chase with
the police. Or take a bullet from
an angry car owner. You’re not
doing her any favors leaving her to
that kind of life.

CHUNK
(impassioned)
Come on, Callum, it’s time to start
thinking about your own future.
What it will do to your dad if you
go to prison.

ON CALLUM

...the weight of his dad hitting him. He thinks this over for

I’ll tell the police everything. On
one condition. They give Vanessa a
deal, too. No jail time and they
protect her, same as me.

Bull and Chunk exchange a look.

CHUNK

like a ten-ton weight has been lifted from his shoulders.

Bull, Chunk, and Callum exit Bull’s office to find Levi

waiting anxiously for them. His eyes find Bull’s.

LEVI
Did he listen to you?

BULL
Yes, he’s going to cooperate.

Levi’s face floods with relief.

BULL
But I’ve got to say, your son has
some pretty serious negotiating
skills. I don’t think he’s going to
have to steal any more cars to do
well in life.

Levi looks proud, but adds for Callum’s benefit.

LEVI
Yeah, well, if he steals any more
cars it’s not prison that he needs
to be scared of.

As Levi pulls Callum to him in a tight embrace, we...

ON CHUNK

...speaking into his phone.

CHUNK
Hey, Anna. It’s your dad. Again.

Chunk hangs up with a deep sigh and turns back to pulling all
the photos and documents from Callum’s case off the wall.

ANNA (O.S.)
Hey, Dad.

CHUNK

Anna steps into the room, but her demeanor is a bit cold.

ANNA
No.

But I heard you got Callum’s
charges dismissed. So I figured I
owed you a thank you.

CHUNK
I was happy to help. You know,
Anna, I--

But Anna cuts him off, in a hurry to get this out...

ANNA
And I wanted to tell you that I
asked Brooks where his money comes
from. He’s not a criminal.
(and then)
He invested in a friend’s cannabis
business early on and it’s done
really well. It’s primarily a cash
business, which is why he gets his
dividends in cash.
(defensive)
And before you say anything about
him being involved with “drugs,”
the business is in New Jersey where
it is one hundreds percent legal.

Chunk knows better than to push his luck at this point.

CHUNK
I wasn’t going to say a thing.

Anna holds Chunk’s gaze for a beat, then...

ANNA
I still don’t think you were right
to investigate Brooks behind my
back.
